Ageism in elementary?

Post by TeacherGal »

Are men and women in their late 40s to early 50s less marketable as elementary teachers?

Women of all ages at my school, however, I am the only male. So, more sexism.

Not really, but early too mid 50s is the typical threshold at which point your overall marketability falls. I agree with @OzGrad though there is a much stronger preference for female over male primary ITs.

It can happen, but experience is also valued. At 56 I attended a job fair, interviewed for 6 schools and was offered all 6 jobs.

After 60 it is harder but that is partly due to visa regulations. In some places you cannot get an initial visa after 60, but o de in you can extend it. In other es you are out at 60.

We were told that males were more marketable in elementary as there were few available and it was good to have a balance of genders in the school. But that hasn't been our experience.

@TeacherGal

I agree, the whole demand for male primary ITs is a myth. If ISs wanted that they could do it, the parents (and moms) want female ITs, they dont care about gender balance.
