ISS seems to have very few listings of the Senior Administrator type; I wonder if that is a direct result of Jane Larson? Certainly I will never use ISS, and I recommend all friends and colleagues to avoid ISS, because of my experience with her. I stll think CoIS is the best - largely because they do not charge candidates fees.

I believe Jane Larson has been gone from ISS for about a year now. She was not with ISS during this past recruiting season.

Interesting thing is the big Boston ISS recruiting fair in Feb 2007 is a combined one with CIS. How will they work out fees and registration when the two organizations have such different fee policies? Will be interesting. ISS is a business and they seem to make lots of $$ doing what they do.

As far as senior admin lisings for int'l or american schools overseas--- This year seemed to be a bumper crop with a VERY long list of positions that were recruited through ISS as well as Search. If you are looking for a senior admin position in a reputable school, you pretty much have to register with one or even both.

re-ISS and admin positions - not true. If you look at the posts they have listed, they are mirroring. ISS has very few of their own; they list those from others and then put "Position Filled"with no details to make it look to the unenlightened as if they had had the searches. (btw - "Joy Jobs" does the same, but charges you to look). TiE is also good, although only their online service - their hard copies frequently arrive after closing dates. Search is gettng more and more ... but you have to pay and getting put forward depends entirely on your relationship with your consultant.

We are neither strictly ISS nor Search Associates(SA) fans, but found we had to register for both this year. My husband and I recruited for an admin + teacher position this year. Some schools were represented by ISS and other schools were represented by SA. Didn't want to limit our possibilities by only going with one or the other. VERY rarely do both conduct the search for the same admin. position.

The previous entry mentioned they mirror the postings. From our experience this does not happen in admin postings. Schools pay an additional fee to list in the admin section and have the agency post the position and initiate the search. It is an additional cost to the school and expensive.

Once an admin posting is closed and moves to the "position filled" section of the website you can no longer access the details of the posting nor the name of the ISS or SA consultant handling the search. If you could still see this information you would see that each position listed whether ISS or SA is handled by a consultant.

ISS lists the position in the "FILLED" section on the admin search part of their website and then will post names in their newspaper Newslinks. SA either states filled or may actually list the name of the person who will take over the position. There are many admin listings still on SA that are in fact closed. We find SA very slow to update their website to clarify status or make announcements on postings. There are admin postings that appear still open on SA that have actually been filled since Feb. We know this personally as a number of close friends accepted admin positions that still appear not filled. SA is slow and disorganized in this regard. Don't be fooled that more schools list with SA.

SA already has new postings for senior level admin positions to be filled in the fall or early winter for 2007/2008. We found ISS slow off the mark to list positions last fall. Maybe they were also disorganized after the departure of the infamous Jane Larson!


Search and CIOS together is better

In Feb. this year my colleagues and I found out the hard way that only going to the CIOS job fair in London meant that as much as half of the jobs originally advertised by CIOS had already gone by the time the fair started. Why? Search Associates had their fair just before and most schools attended both and worked on a first come, first served basis. Can't really blame them I suppose.

The thing that really got us was that good old Jim told the assembled teachers on the Thursday night that he had been shocked by the number of teachers not showing up or just popping their heads in and saying they already had a job via Search and wouldn't be there for COIS. He then as much told us that he would black list teachers doing that. If the schools and COIS can get us there under false pretenses which they seem to find just fine, COIS has no right to complain that teachers, the weaker . in this game, do what's best for them. Clearly, most recruiters and schools will not do what's right or fair for the teachers.

Later I heard that a lot of teachers who 'lucked out' had to come back to London in May but, predictably, had learned the harsh lesson and went to both fairs instead of just COIS.

A union or organization would be great for teachers, wouldn't it be nice to show up at a recruitment fair and see a table with our teaching representative present to assist us with contracts and ISS?

How about pestering the NEA or your respective legislature, New Jersey does have an attorney general perhaps if enough complaints are recorded the business practices of ISS will be investigated.

Jane Larsen is a but a symptom of an industry that needs some regulating.

I couldn't figure it out. I was at a Search fair and several colleagues were also there. They had received several posted/file requests for interviews, but I had none. I was, at that time, more qualified than some of them. Even one man I know was offered interviews for jobs that I was more qualified for. What was going on? Then it became clear. I sat down with a school that had my file in hand, and I asked the admin. rep. why I hadn't received a request from them for a position I was teaching at that very point in time. He went on to tell me that they didn't want to hire someone who had only had one year of teaching experience. I said, "what, I have taught 4 years now, one back home and three in XXX." I asked if I could look at my file. Why not, it was mine. Search had blown it big time. They had photo-copied the file I used when I first recruited with them. Nothing of the update from my last 3 years of overseas teaching had been included. But Search would never have allowed me to recruit if I did not have an updated file. So what was going on? I talked to the Search Rep. in charge of my candidacy. He couldn't explain it. This was on Thursday afternoon of a T-F-S conference, and by that time nearly every interview slot had been filled. The Search rep. asked me for my list of desired schools, which I gave him. He ran around begging them to interview me. In the end I got 3 interviews from among the dozen, or so, schools I had on the list. Following the first one I figured I was out-of-luck. The administrator told me that he was really reluctant to add me and that he was doing it as a favor to "Mr. Search." It was definitely not a very serious interview, and since it had to be done after the scheduled interview period, he probably didn't really want to do it. The other two interviews didn't go much better, and besides they were both with the last 2 or 3 schools on my list, which weren't much of a step up from where I already was.
What could I do? Mr. Search couldn't explain what had happened, and he was too busy running around "smoozing" with the school reps. anyway. The letter I later sent to Search went nowhere. I didn't even get a response. I had paid plenty of money to get to that fair, stay in the host hotel, and for it I got nothing. If I could have, I would have sued them, but it would have gone nowhere as they would have covered their tracks I am sure. I had no proof, they had all the power. How could I prove they were negligent when I couldn't prove I had sent them new papers, and sent them in time, which I had by a long shot?

I should have known better than to use Search at all anyway. The founding director is a jerk, in my opinion. Back in the pre-Search days, when he was a school head in SE Asia, he was recruiting at an ISS conference. I had just graduated, with honors, and with a double-major and good references for a new graduate from a highly-rated state university - one often cited for excellence in a major publication that ranks universities. I approached him about an internship at his school, and he had the audacity to tell me, to my face, that he "only considers interns from Ivy League level schools."

These guys are too full of themselves!!!

I feel for you. I've had several issues with Search over updating my biographical info. as well. If you are referring to the Dubai Search Fair, I can only imagine how much the hotel alone cost you.

I just switched to Search this year after too many years of CIS same ol', same ol'. In the end I decided to leave CIS because a school broke contract with me three years ago. I was hired at the February fair, signed a contract and was informed two months later, after having planned for shipping and gotten all of my paperwork in order and sent to the school that the board arbitrarily decided to hire a local and decided my position should no longer exist. CIS "allowed" me to attend the May fair (which was one week after the loss of the job) and told me I should behave "positively" when I talked to them and complained that the school should be penalized for dropping me right after hiring me and for no reason at all except to save money.
The upshot: the school was at subsequent recruiting fairs and there seemed to be no repercussions at all. I luckily got a replacement job at the fair in May, with help from the director at the school who canceled my contract. I decided to move on from CIS after this.
Search was just OK. They did lose one of my recommendations and continuously told me it was not there. When it was submitted for the third time, my file was finally deemed complete.
They were not as friendly as I expected and my representative often acted very impatient with questions, especially pertinent ones that he could not answer.
I ended up getting a great job on a phone interview after the fair--and it was not through Search.
