Search Fair Dubai
Did anyone go to the Search Fair in Dubai this past weekend? How was it? What were your thoughts? Were all the schools from the ME?

Agree with shadylane. Waste of time and money as the majority of schools at these fairs are tier 2 and 3. Elite school jobs are scooped over Skype by Oct-Dec.

Fairs are shrinking, SA doesnt have a summer shuffle this year nor did they have an LCSA fair. The mega fairs are:
BKK -> ISS and SA (Start of peak recruiting season).
LON -> SA and COIS (Mid Season, the IB and EU fair)
SF -> SA and ISS (End of peak recruiting season).
Then you have the fairs that have value but are nothing special (mostly leadership):
Leadership Fair -> SA (usually in November)
Leadership Fair -> ISS (Coincides with the AAIE Conference)
BOS -> SA (Historical US Mega Fair, and end of peak recruiting)
Then you have the fairs that have limited value within certain regions to certain audiences of ITs such as the SA HK fair (which is the HK shuffle for HK ITs).
The rest are dump fairs, especially the SA Spring repeats. The early pre-season fairs are focused on ISs introducing themselves to ITs or ISs that have such a high degree of attrition/maturation (low tier) they know they will have vacancies and are trying to get to ITs before peak recruiting during what are typically different academic years for that region of DTs (IE. the Melbourne fair is at the end of the AUS academic year). Leadership doesnt know what vacancies they are going to have in October (SG fair) and December is still early and too busy for both recruiters/leadership and ITs for anyone who isnt local.
Make no mistake though if the recruiters and leadership wanted to transition to virtual recruiting in its entirety they could and it wouldnt take much more than a blink for it to happen. Recruiters/leadership want the fairs because the environment is advantageous to their recruiting and the travel offers certain opportunities for them.
'Early recruiting' for Elite and 'mimics' is still pre-peak season culminating with 'first night' recruiting and the meet and greet.

Re: Search Fair Dubai
Shadylane, there are only three fairs I would put on my "definitely attend" list - Search Bangkok in January, Search London in January and Search Boston in January.
If I had to pick a fair to go to before that, it would be Search Toronto, depending on whether I wanted to target a school attending there. That is in December.
If I wanted to pick a fair after the trifecta, it would likely be Search San Francisco in early-mid-February because some higher tier schools are still looking.
Realistically, I usually aim for Bangkok. Last year when we made a move, we signed up for Bangkok, put in a request for London just in case, and ended up not going to the fair as we had offers pre-fair, which saved us a couple of thousand $$.
I had a friend this year who went to the Dubai fair run by schools themselves - lots of chatter but not a lot of jobs going at that point...he wishes he hadn't of spent spent the money to go.

Interesting picture painted....Now if IB/EU postings are what you are interested in...and you indicate London as the fair to go to...what of the late postings in EU? Would you still see them due to the labor laws? Where are those usually posted and do they still exist? Strictly school websites? I've never been on Search in the Spring since I've usually found employment by January.

Not all ITs wait until the Spring. You have a number of factors and scenarios, such as ITs that are retiring out, and there isnt any surprise about it. You then have another suite of factors that are essentially mutual and non-adversarial. Leadership and recruiters want/need an early framework of their staffing needs, but ITs also want to recruit and the earlier they do that the more successful and greater options they have. Just because they can delay their intent until much later in the year doesnt mean its in their best interests to do so. The IT wants to attend the LON fair with a strong positive reference at the same time IS Genovia is going to be recruiting and wants to identify the best replacement they can, there are only benefits to communicating both parties intentions (at least at that point). Where "issues" develop is when that ITs recruiting efforts dont meet expectations and the fails to execute their separation as they provided in their intent.
This isnt the problem in the WE that those outside see it as, its just part of doing business in the EU, it happens, its dealt with, and tomorrow is another day.

Re: Search Fair Dubai
A lot of schools in Europe gather lists for tentative positions (their people who are at the fair but will only leave for the right job, for example) and use these compiled lists when the jobs do become available. They simply cross off the names of those no longer available and start getting back to the rest even as they reopen the positions in the spring. It can save them a lot of work in the spring when the job does open up to have a list of people whom they have already interviewed in London and who might still be available. Obviously if schools attend later fairs, they do get those candidates, but the stronger candidates are at the London fair or applying directly.
Discussion
I disagree with @Thames Pirate, its not a lot of ISs or a lot of lists, ISs do post tentative job vacancies, but when Spring comes around they have no idea who is available and they cant really do too much interviewing for every intent notice they get for each vacancy that may then possibly become available, its why there is a peak period in the recruiting cycle for Spring, because ISs need to fill end of year vacancies. Those ITs arent going to typically wait around for Spring and let all those other opportunities go away for what might be a vacancy that doesnt materialize and even if it does ITs dont get tentative contracts typically, though there is a minor amount.

twoteachers - if I was aiming for Europe or European flavour, I would also be willing to take a flyer on the CIS fair in London.

The CIS and SA fair are what make the LON fair a mega fair.
