DODDS

Post by Saiyara »

Anyone know if DODDS will be at any recruiting fairs this year? I know they have attended UNI & ISS in the past. Anyone here ever worked for them before? If so, where and how did you like it?

DoDDS

Don't know their recruiting schedule. My guess is if they attend a fair it's for info dissemination only and few if any job offers are made. Most years they don't start offering jobs (if they have any) until April and usually later. But one never knows.

Beemarcus,

Thanks for your reply. I read the thread on the second page of the forum as you suggested. Very interesting info. I guess I may as well forget about DODDS for the time being.

I taught in intl. schools in Egypt & Korea. DODDS contacted me a total of 4 times while I was in these countries and I did not even bother to interview as I was under contract with these other schools. Then, after long consideration, I decided to move back home to the States. So, I get back home in June and, literally, the day after I accepted a wonderful job offer in Atlanta the principal from Butzbach ES in Germany called and wanted to interview me for an ESL position. I thought, "What the heck". I talked to her and less than a week later got a call back saying that I was indeed offered the job. I really didn't think I'd get it as she said she had a list of eleven people she wanted to interview. After much thought and many tears because I wasn't sure what to do, I declined. I figured that I had planned on coming home for a long time & had a silbing with an illness so I decided I should stay put here for a while. That was four years ago.

I figured they would never call me again. However, at the very beginning of this 2007/08 school year, a principal from a school in/near Tokyo emailed me to see if I was interested in a hearing impaired position. It was itinerant meaning I would have to drive to three different schools in the area to serve HI kids. I have tons of living & travel experience but driving in Tokyo would totally freak me out! No thanks. I did not interview with this principal. I simply sent him an email telling him that I was not interested in a itinerant position but did ask him to keep me in mind for other positions should they come available.

I am certified in elementary education, ESL and my master's degree is in hearing impairment. The majority of times they have called me have been for HI positions.

I have a friend who works work DODDS and she told me that Butzbach ES, where I got the job offer, closed.

I didn't feel comfortable accepting that job at the time but now I do believe I would consider a DODDS position. Isn't that the way it always is... the second you are ready for something it doesn't come your way!

After reading your posts and seeing how many schools really are closing, it makes me discouraged that they will call again anytime soon.

Do you mind if I ask what school you taught at in Japan? Also, were there any HI kids at your school?

We were in the far west end. Navy base. No HI at our school. Dont' be so sure there are not openings these days for specialist positions like yours. If you were getting that much contact from them in recent years, my guess is those hard to fill spots are probably the best options for someone wanting to get into DoDDS right now. Never hurts to try. I think in general, classroom teachers openings will be in short supply until the draw down ends in Germany. Tokyo is a fun place. Don't dismiss it. Would not be my first choice, but I'd take it if no other options and I wanted to get back into DoDDS.

Thanks for the info, Beemarcus. Will keep my options open for DODDS. You never know, they may call again. Will post on here if they do.
