I'm not sure what WASC can do.

The detention period is approaching 60 days.

And as yet, no official charges have been laid.

Re: JIS teachers jailed without charges

Yes - it is a WASC school.

The teachers have now been in prison since July 14. Charges are yet to be laid.

No teachers, office staff or parents who were near the alleged crime scene have yet been interviewed by the police. Extraordinary:(

Re: Which Job Fair for an IB Math Teacher

Qualified mathematics teachers with IB experience are highly sought after in all school systems.

If I was you, I would contact schools that interest you from October onwards - express a willingness (in fact a desire) to discuss your application/interest in the school via Skype.

If a school replies and asks what fair you intend to go to, tell them, but add that you hope to secure a position ahead of the fair - it worked for me. I think I wrote something like - "I have applied to attend the Search Bangkok fair but am hoping to secure a position ahead of the fair. If you are interested, I would be delighted to speak to you via Skype." The principal replied to suggest a time and a week later I had a job offer. This was in mid-October.

If your focus is Asia, Search Bangkok would be preferable - however, it is a long way from the US if you are travelling from there. Really, with your subject area, you are going to find a job. However, some of the uber schools in Asia may be staffed by the end of the Bangkok fair - they really do try to fill those hard to fill positions before the fairs.

Good luck with your job search:)

Re: JIS teachers jailed without charges

The police in this case have extended the detention time for these teachers to up to 60 days. Today marks the 21st day these men have been detained without yet being charged, or told of the evidence against them.

If you want any more evidence that the case is bogus and the police are corrupt, consider this - the rapes allegedly took place in the teacher's glass walled office. This office is found in the administration area of the elementary school. Despite having the men in prison for 3 weeks, and being told of the allegations 2 months ago, the police are yet to interview anyone who works near the office where the crime allegedly took place. Not any of the other teachers, other parents, or the office staff.

Please help fellow international school teachers in need by signing the 2 petitions. Further information can be found in the other posts.

Thank you.

Yes, you are right.

Here is another petition one of the teacher's brother has started.

Please help a fellow international school teacher in need - and if you have any doubt that the charges are bogus, just do a little research, starting with the article I posted earlier. Or go to https://www.jisedu.or.id/press/index.aspx. Aside from some interesting videos (the one from July 24 absolutely skewers the case against these teachers), the school has posted links to a range of articles from international journalists. Or read this, written by reps of WordWorks: http://files.realspellers.org/letter_fo ... achers.pdf

Here is a link to the 2nd petition - it is now 2 weeks since the teachers were detained. They still have not been officially charged with any crime (just being detained for questioning)

Congrats on the posting.

But be a sport - share what the salary actually is.

What does an experienced teacher at IS Stuttgart start on and what does the salary rise to? What is the salary after tax?

JIS teachers jailed without charges

Please read the following article. For any teacher working in a country that has not yet established "rule of law' and has high levels of corruption, it could be us in this situation.

If after reading the article, you want to help, there is a link to a petition that you may want to sign. Thanks.

It's be great is you could give some specific numbers on salary. What would an experienced teacher with a Masters degree start on, and what is the maximum salary? Thanks:)

Re: Salary/Cost of Living in Europe

Even if that is a net figure, it seems very low.

Of course, location does matter.

However, anywhere in Western Europe is going to be a stretch on 20k.

It would be tough to be in the dream location, but be in such dire straits financially that you can not really afford to take advantage of it.

I have friends who have done a 5 year stretch in a high paying, but less desirable, location - and then saved heaps. Then , for their next job, they have done a 2-3 stretch in the dream location. Now, they have headed back to the higher paying regions.

Anyway, good luck with your decision.

Wish I'd spotted this earlier - stay away from this school. It is an absolute mess right now - even the Indonesian teacher aides are leaving en masse.

Re: Should I go for Geography or Economics, Teaching IBDP?

I agree with Shadowjack.

In my experience, Business has been the subject with the strongest growth in recent years. Economics is probably taught more in international schools, but Business is catching up.

I worked at a school that introduced Business and within a few years, it had more sections than Economics and History combined. Geography ended up being scrapped because it could only attract a handful of students.

JIS is good but pretty far away from everything. I spoke to a teacher there once and she said it takes 2-3 hours to get downtown.

Traffic in Jkt is terrible - but new teachers are generally placed in areas where there is a fair bit to do without travelling for anywhere near that long. Many teachers, for instance, live in Kemang, and are in walking distance of lots of bars, restaurants and shops etc.

Teachers do tend to stay at JIS for a fairly long time - so Jkt must not be too hideous;)

Re: Workload at IS
Hi all,

Could maybe somebody shed some light on how much the average workload is for teachers at IS (in terms of class periods per week), possibly also what's the range? Specifically I'm interested in numbers for the senior level, i.e. 11th and 12th grades.

Also do classes at IS usually take place only from Mo-Fri or do some schools also have classes on Saturdays?

Many thanks in advance.
It is hard to generalise - in my experience, the work load in international schools in terms of face to face teaching time has been less than I experienced in Australia.

Most IS I have worked at have required gr 11/12 teachers to teach 5 different classes (out of 8 blocks). In the larger schools, the teachers tend to have repeat classes - for example, I once has 2 HL Economics, 2 SL Economics and 1 10th grade Economics class. So there were 3 preps.

I also found the average class sizes to be lower. In Australia, 25 is the norm and class sizes can get up to 30-32 in some schools. In my international schools, 25 would be seen as an exceptionally large class size. Most my classes have been 19-21 in number. In that example I gave, all the classes were in the high teens.

The kicker is that the expectations have been higher in IS than at home. However, I have not found that I have had to work harder.
