For a full benefits package and 11k RM, I would work there. There are enough EE writers out there that students utilize anyway. They didn't go for my request, and I didn't care. Plenty of schools will overwork you in today's market.

I find a clear rejection infinitely better than being strung along with some minuscule hope of acceptance.

Do you know how many trolls post on forums.....

If youmbelieve everything you tell the students....well...it will usually make no difference, so whatever. This is where having subject mastery first is a huge advantage and if there is something you are unsure about, log onto FB and ask your uni mates that went on to do their PhDs. The funny stuff I have heard over the years......somethings in science do not have satisfactory answers yet and students need to know that what they are learning is a current understanding, probably rubbish, or about to be chucked out.

I would put it this way, International university teaching is much more lucrative and they putmsubject mastery over the education degree. The education degree is a bonus, makes your job easier and you get a pay bump.

If you are actually talented in your field, why not go for it.

I also disagree with the assessment that top schoolsmdon't value subject mastery. Sure the education component must be satisfied and you must be certified, but subject mastery will put you ahead of other candidates with just a BEd, regardless of experience.

I disagree with Dave's assessment of how the Chinese give their professional 'license' to foreigners. Yes, the foreign expert certificate is stronger, but I received one in Beijing and one in Shanghai before I had my teaching diploma. I had teaching experience though.

The qualification is a Bachelor's degree, and 2 years of ANY semi related experience. Els, industry experience count for the certificate, school just has to say so. As far as most governments are concerned, employment decisions are the company's problem, and they will only interfere in security situations.

Schools that say otherwise are politely saying you are not experienced by their standards in my opinion. Or their HR department really don't know how to do their job. I recall a situation where a friend transferred from a crappier school in Beijing to one of the better ones. HR in the good school was telling him he would have to go back home, do this and that etc etc, then come and get a new foreign experts certificate. He complained to old HR, and she told new HR what to give her, then she went to get the new visa and transfer the foreign experts certificate, then sent them the bill. All documents done within a week.

I disagree, some will have large budgets but are incapable of actually managing (no concept of time, money and workload management). They don't really conflict with you, but it makes your life miserable over time.

Basically, can't run a business or a school.

Number of students, prep periods, different subjects all play their part.if you had 500 students, but only taught 1 subject and saw any group 3 times a week, and 18 hours contact. I wouldn't complain about marking since I only need to prepare for 3 hours a week and can always organize assessment to make my life easier.

But if you had small the regular sized classes around 20, but had 5 separate subjects, and 18 hours, then you are kinda screwed since you are spending more time on prep and won't have much time to mark. Teachers at my school don't bother grading since we don't physically have time.

It will take experience to figure out exactly how much time you might actually have to tourself

I can't remember the statistic, but a significant number of married men that go to shanghai with their non-Asian wives end up divorced and happy with multiple girls just out of their teens.

Such is the talent pool in large Asian cities....you wouldn't really stand a chance unless somebody has a fetish. Sorry to be so cruel, but that is how it goes. Men don't think with their brains after all.....haha

Somethings were just not meant to be. While I believe that you should be able to break contract, it needs to be done at the agreement of both parties. But I can understand if somebody just wants out. Some relationships are just not worth the effort and criticizing somebody for making what was their best decision at the time is unfair and goes against what we should believe as educators.

I always leave out loads of stuff from my CV because
1) it is not that relevant
2) Need to know only
3) None of their business
4) do not wish to be called upon to do jobs that they really should hire a team of experts to do that is not normal teaching duty
5) makes it seem fake since I was an elite student and still young
6) resumes need to target the audience, I will put some of the other stuff on if it was actually relevant

If they really really tried and found out, I will just say it was a past learning/traumatic experience and you wish to move past it.

The HS science teachers I work with have a good understanding of the Maths needed in their particular science, and not necessarily so good with the rest. The exception are physics teachers that actually studied physics in uni, their math is excellent. The IB still has significant math skills needed in the sciences, and you will frequently find yourself teaching the math necessary.

It's impossible to match the math demands in the sciences with the actual math course as the requirement in each course is different. Having said that, I have Chem covered for their math (logs), physics soon (trig) but bio needs to wait (graphs and stats). In the physics class, I have had to explain plenty of Maths already.

MS science would be ok, since they tend to be math lite. there also tends to be less demand for teachers.

My advice is to pick your passion and go for it, don't choose a subject because it is easier to find a job.

Topic: difference between first and second interview
Replies: 5

In my experience the second interview is basically to set up an offer if they are planning to. Probably because they needed to check another candidate first, and it's usually just one other for competition.

I've had a few second interviews, and most became offers within the first few minutes, or they are telling you that they have offered it to the other guy and can only offer you if they reject it (why can't other people do that for me just once.....). One long winded chap talked for about an hour before offering, had to take a day off school that morning since it was the middle of the night.

I also had two interviews at a school that was changing heads, so the outgoing filtered us, and the incoming chose who he wanted.

I would also assume any advanced position will come with a second interview anyway.

My experience in bkk last year was that I was marketable, however too expensive. 2 years IB experience and more of other stuff including minor admin roles. Family seemed to be the dictating factor there, 3 dependents. However mega genius kids and now teaching wife should make a difference the next time we look.

Can't remember how many interviews, but it was about 10. 0 offers. I also found out later that I was interviewing for some jobs already offered to someone else, so that was a waste of time. I did meet the recruiter that eventually recruited me outside of those interviews.

I also remember an interviewer talking to me just for research purposes (different fair). Supposedly scored one of the highest at the fair for quality teaching (well duh, I'm the best). It was the biggest waste interview time unless he becomes head of some awesome school I want to work for.
