I'm trying to stay close enough or be able to take public transporation or walk. Couldn't find much open within 10 blocks- or at least those hotels that are listed on the typical travel sites.

Wanted to get my reservation in, have already got one for UNI and will choose soon between two depending on schoo's attending.

Re: Hotels
The fair isnt in Boston, its in the town of Cambridge, M.A. which is about 3 miles away from Boston. Boston has a lot of hotels, I'm surprised your having a problem. I stay at the Marriot (my company is a preferred vendor for the chain and gets me about $35 a night).
That's a great price. I knew the location though- thought someone might have had good experience in hotel near public transportation in either Boston or Cambridge. Having trouble finding hotels with vacencies during the fair.

Finally found a small hotel in ex-firehouse near MIT- so close enough. About $140 per night.

Thanks-

Hotel in Cambridge

I've searched for 'search' 'cambridge' 'boston' 'hotel' and haven't found much in terms of alternatives hotels for the Search Fair in Boston.

Does anyone have a decent hotel close to the Hyatt in Boston for the Search Fair this winter?

Thanks and take care....

The last thing this site needs is less information and participation. Much of what is written is opinion, and it should be taken as such. That's a big part of the value, at least for me. I take it as such, and value the experience and input from all. I don't make up my mind based on one post, but try and read many and gain insight that I otherwise couldn't get anywhere else.

ACE

I just finished my MEd at ACE- primarily to gain Type 75 Admin Endorsement in the State of IL. My tuition was paid for by the district I work at- total cost to me was $4750- but it's since risen. I have since passed the IL-Cert Test 186 and achieved my Admin Cert.

ACE was affiliated with Barat College in Lake Forest- a suburb of Chicago a while back. However it since split- and achieved accreditation through that relationship. Arne Duncan, while head of Chicago Public School established ACE as one of CPS's main tool to provide leadership training to both teachers and potential Principals.

It is seen as a viable and legitimate option in the Chicago area. In class I had many students from around the country- both teachers, nurses and future Admin's.

It took me 18 months to complete the program, including my internship.

As with any online program, you get what you put into it. It was very convenient for me, and I am already in an Administrative position. Plus it was free to me. Instruction varied, as with any school. The workload consisted of at least one paper and one test per week. Plus an internship project per class. Workload wasn't onerous, but if you fell behind, it was some work to catch up.

If you need any more info, please let me know.

Health Care Evaluation

I know it's a subjective topic (and a long shot), but does anyone have a good online source for evaluating the expate health care options by city? Some kind of searchable database....

Thanks

I'm now in the Chicago area of the US. The job market is indeed very gloomy. We just opened up a position due to increased enrollment and had 170 applicants in two hours.

However in talking to people looking for teaching jobs, I don't think many consider relocating to pursue teaching- or that my opinion. The option of taking a job in outside of this geographic area is still not widely considered by many. Even going to surrounding states where is might be more rural, but at least be able to teach is seen by many as not an option.

I'm sure there are those that will consider it, but I'm not hearing anyone mention it. On the flip side, many teachers I know are hunkering down and not even looking for a another job.

Our first year in Singapore we didn't have a car. My wife and I decided to find a house near things to do, rather than near school.

One thing I should have done is considered the time it took me to get to work using public transportation.

If I had to do it over again, I'd start from my place of work, and travel backwards, using public transportation. In other words, figure out where the closest bus stop or MRT station is to your school. Then consider your budget, and how many stops/transfers you can stomach. Find somewhere to live close to the end point of your route.

I always envied those people who only had to walk a couple of blocks to their bus stop, and didn't have a transfer.

It was no fun having two bus transfers to make during a morning monsoon. I ended up bringing my work cloths in a bag and dressing at work.

We also ended up living close to an HDB block. Shopping at the wet market, and eating there ended up saving us a lot of money- rather than buying all our stuff at Cold Storage or where ever. If you shop like a local, you can save money.

Depends on where you want to live. Check out Straits Times housing:

http://property.st701.com/

There is a wide range of prices- as in any city. Being closer to public transportation, amenities and attractions impacts cost. Are you going to have a bike, motorcycle or car?

We used an agent when we got there. Made the process a lot quicker and allowed us to concentrate on job.

When my wife and I were overseas we filed our US taxes through a US company in our host location. We were paid over the exemption limit, but since we also paid local taxes, we ended up not owing taxes in the US.

The tax company (can't remember which- but one that is well known in the US) we contracted with not only understood expat issues, local tax law as well as US tax law.

I've never heard of self employment tax being paid by expats. Wherever you are going I've got to believe there are tax companies that are used to dealing with US expat taxes. I'd rely on them.
She also informed me that I would be required to pay self-employment tax at a rate of around 14% on my earnings WHAT? I wasn't expecting that.
Never heard that. You might get a second opinion....

"You mentioned that you indicated race, gender, marital status in your cover letter."

For that reason I'd strongly suggest including a head shot photo on your resume. On mine I also include links to Youtube video of me working and or any other digital portfolio I might have.

Many job fairs strongly suggest a photo though. I'm sure it's also so that Supts can remember you after a long day of interview, but it also puts a face to the name.

I would also add that you should make sure you want to teach, period. If you don't enjoy teaching, it's not going to matter much where you live. You should decide first that you actually want to teach, then whether you want to go overseas.
