International teacher wanted for murdering a fellow teacher
They were working at the Horizon International School in Yangon. Although this tragic incident happened in November, it just came across my feed. Interpol has finally issued a notice. We should be aware as he's probably working in some bottom feeder language institute in SE Asia. So sad and tragic!

Degrees earned from US institutions can be easily verified regardless of if the school has lost its accreditation. They've automated the process. She should have been able to prove her degrees.
Getting documents attested and getting an apostille doesn't authenticate a degree. You can get any document apostilled. It means nothing.

Phony principal gets outed by students

ISR this phony admin has some unfavorable reviews on this site. I'm sure the school board and these students would benefit greatly from all the reviews of her on here. You should contact them because these are the type of people that give us international educators a bad name. 19 years of scamming schools with her fake credentials. Even one of the reviews here says "She is apparently not qualified for the job as evidenced by the KHDA."
I'm glad she got outed!

Re: African American
In August this site shared an article highlighting International Teachers of Color in The Wall Street Journal. I know that many of the teachers who were highlighted in that article contribute to the forums. I find it sad that for some reason the admin turned off the comments for that particular article; relegating ALL 'minorities' to only leave comments on an 8 year old article that doesn't encompass the diversity of educators today.
Diversity in international education is a topic that needs to be discussed openly, not hindered.
Do better next time ISR.

Re: Telling the kids
Definitely read the following books; not only for your family but for insight into the dynamic of you future students as well if you're working at a school with a diverse student body.
-Emotional Resilience and the Expat Child
-Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Amongst Worlds
I'm sure others can give you suggestions as well.

Re: NAFSA: Association of International Educators
Thanks grdwdgrrrl! I'm not looking for a job in higher ed, I'm just wishing to expand my involvement with larger professional associations that offer networking or support for K-12 international educators. I guess I'll keep my NEA membership going. For IEs I reckon CIS, ECIS, and other regional associations are still our best bet.

Is anyone here a member? I know some people will chime in to say that professional organizations in our field are not worth it. However, I'm asking for people who are actually members to share their opinions. I'm looking at their FB page, but I'm wondering if there is a targeted subgroup for K-12 educators, or do they lean more towards internationalism in higher ed?

Re: Outward Facing / Progressive Schools
There's a growing network of democratic schools across the globe. In these schools the students of all ages take responsibility for their own learning, and for the principles that govern their school community. There is no prescribed curriculum and the students choose their own activities and associate with whom they please.
The Sudbury Schools are the most popular but you can find established schools in many countries.

Re: African American
Don't let the color of your skin hold you back from applying to jobs. There are quite a few FB groups for minorities working at international schools if you do a search. These serve as networking and support groups as well as job opportunities. Also, look beyond the Middle East. So many Black American educators are automatically looking to that region as if its the only option. It's a good thing that most international schools require a CV with photo because those schools won't contact you anyways, so its really a non-issue.
The problem isn't that most of the better international schools are discriminatory, the problem is that there are not nearly enough qualified minorities APPLYING for these positions.
We are out here, and we are working at some of the top schools.

Re: Africa with small kids
Mamava said it all really. There are several schools in Tanzania that are quality schools, and very family oriented. The water was safe to drink on the campus and at housing on campus at the school I was at. The local, western-run hospital was a five minute drive away. It was a fantastic environment for children as they were out playing all day, had tremendous learning experiences with the local culture, and an expanded community as many of the international schools in Tanzania come together frequently for sporting events.
However, Tanzania has just put restrictions on the ex-pats who come to work in the country. At the moment teachers can only work there for a maximum of 4 years. Definitely ask about it if interviewed at any schools in Tanzania. I'm actually trying to go back in two years or so! I loved it there.

Turkey's latest crackdown on educators
https://www.rt.com/news/352119-turkey-p ... p-attempt/
This will definitely affect international schools in Turkey. Can anyone currently employed by a school there keep us updated?
A few months ago I spoke with some student-teachers who did an internship at one supposed international school in Istanbul (international is even in their title). The school was having a visit from the education ministry, and removed and hid EVERY workbook, worksheet, and any other piece of literature that was written in English; essentially erasing any evidence of the students' bilingual learning.
This is frightening; Erdogan is crazy!
