Re: Life after international teaching...

@chimath - They have two programs: virtual and hybrid. The hybrid students spend 3 days a week with teachers andtwo days a week on-line. The virtual program is what I do and it is 100% online. You have to help proctor exams in December and in May but other than that and a few days per semester training, you work from home.

The company that provides maintains the online learning system (OLS) and the learning management system (LMS) is called k12. Their clients are school districts in all 50 states. k12 is trying to get into the international market so there may be opportunities oversea.

I just started in March so my workload is light - I only have 300 students. More experienced teachers have as many as 500 students. I'm guessing this is the beginning of the end of the teaching profession as we know it.

Re: Life after international teaching...

"HB- Is the school a US school? What age groups and class?"

Yes, its a public school - an online public school, a virtual school, and you can work from anywhere.
I teach grades 10 and 11 but the school itself is k12. In fact the outfit that runs it is called k12.
Just google k12 virtual schools - there are tons of jobs.

Re: Life after international teaching...

I was hired in March at an online school public school - and I love it!
I am seriously considering doing this for the next 10 years.

Re: saying no nicely to a contract signed?

I've been here but the soul-less ISR admin have been deleting my posts. I've kept up on every idiotic thing you've written HeyTeach so don't worry.

You've called me a troll several times and I'm not sure what you mean. I though trolls just made shit up? Everything I say here is true. I make nothing up! I've been doing runners for 30 years. On average, I sign 3 contracts per year. I still get multiple job offers per year. I may be a tourist teacher but I'm not a troll.

This year, for example, I started in St. Thomas and stayed there for 10 weeks. I loved it! I was living in Red Hook and hung out on Coki Beach with the Rasta men. Then I did a runner to Kuwait to get some cash; I was there about 2 months and did a runner to Thailand where I worked at a 3rd tier school and had some fun. I'm finishing the year in Florida, visiting family.

For next year, so far, I signed on at schools in China, Thailand and Malaysia but its still early - maybe I'll sign a 4th contract.

So how am I a troll?

"Just" and "Typical" is exactly the attitude I'm talking about.

nes can get you jobs making up to $70,000 per year.
It got me my job last year making $55,000 tax free and including housing and flights.

Re: Teachanywhere.com

Teachanywhere works and I have gotten well paying jobs through their service.
NES also works and again, I have gotten well paying jobs through their service as well.

Many teachers think in terms tiers when it comes to schools and placement services. They probably think of Teachanywhere and NES as 3rd tier recruitment agencies that place teachers in 3rd tier schools and so pay big bucks to Search or ISS and waste even more time and money at recruitment fairs in search of 1st tier schools. They are the fools!

So called 3rd tier schools have consistently over the years made me more money and with less stress and much less work than so called 1st tier schools. And for that, I thank Teach Anywhere and NES.

Re: how many hours do you work a week?

You people are working too much!
I don't think its the jobs that are too demanding but the teachers that don't recognize a dawdle for what it is.
Or else you're just suckers.

Now, I know the likes of Sid and Walther will immediately say I'm at a 3rd tier school but its not true. I paid $54.99 to a fake references service and I'm at a 1st tier school in a paradise. During the multiple skype interviews, I was told again and again how demanding the parents are and how they need regular communication and how much work would be expected of me. Basically, the same shit admin always says; and as usual, I smiled and nodded but I'm not working.

To date, over the past 6 weeks, I've done almost as little as I did last year. Today for instance, I spent most of the time applying for other jobs, just in case the opportunity for a profitable runner materializes. When I wasn't looking for other jobs, I was searching webehigh.org to find the best area to score in.

I see my life as an international school teacher as blessed and a gift from God and I won't waste blessing working 50 hour weeks for the lousy US$60,000 they pay me. For that, they get my best dawdle.

Sid and Walter - two pigs in a blanket and of course they would have nothing but strong words for anyone attempting to protect themselves. Sid and Walter are of the grin and bear it philosophy and believe if an owner does you over just do your best to move happily on. They are house-boys and servants and serve their masters well. They are admin.

Re: how many hours do you work a week?

Marv Asked: "I was wondering if people would share how many hours they work a week."

Now just to be clear, are you asking how many hours I'm at work or how many hours I work?

I'm AT work about 35 hours per week, minus the times when I manage to sneak off campus, which is about 5 hrs per week so I'm actually AT work 30 hours per week.

As far as how many hours I actually work, it varies from 0 to 5 hours per week.
Today for example, I worked about 30minutes in one of my classes and the rest, I just had study hall.

I have never actually worked more than 10 hours per week but that was before I learned the moves.

I thought trolls just made things up - I'm honestly sharing some tried and true techniques that can get a fellow through a career with as little effort as possible.

Today, for example, I came in early and changed times on as many of the clocks as I could. The idea is simple - set your clock 5 minutes ahead and then you get an extra 5 minutes of free time. The trick though is randomly setting all clocks either 5 minutes ahead or 5 minutes behind. Then students aren't saying "why is Mr. so and so's clock always 5 minutes fast?" That would bring admin out of their rat-holes. Instead, by fucking up the time on ALL clocks, students will say "why are ALL the clocks wrong in this school!"

Re: Modern English School - Egypt

I frequently hear ShadowJack's type of comment: its not fair for ShadowJack, its not fair for the student, its not fair to society.

Yesterday though the kids came back with their brown paper bags fill of junk. They were flushed and happy and it was like a mini-outing for them. They all agreed on how much they enjoyed my class and compared me favorably to other teachers. I encouraged them in that comparison and let them know how I just loved to gives As to my students. I gave them a stapler and told them to put their names on their bags and staple them shut. Then when they left, I threw the paper bags away. Tomorrow I will tell them they all 100% on the paper bag project.

They had a good time, I got to do nothing and everybody was happy.

Re: Modern English School - Egypt

I hate Mondays! I especially hate to teach on Mondays!

So I gave each of my first period students a brown paper bag and told them to go outside, walk around campus and fill that brown paper bag up with random shit. Trusting as you'd expect kids to be, they are out there now filling up their brown paper bags and no doubt totally believing that there is a point to the activity. I'm not quite sure what the point will be but I'll make something up - just as soon as I get a cup of coffee and steal a donut out of the faculty fridge.

Re: Modern English School - Egypt

Micky Moralized: A post like that is a disgrace to the career of teaching."

Why is it a disgrace? I got on well with the students, the parents and the owner. The principal liked me because I wasn't forever complaining about behavior or sending students to the office. My fellow teachers seemed the only ones with a problem because "school-wide discipline" policies weren't being followed. Who cares! MES is providing a service to, as all know, wealthy Egyptians and they expect a certain kind of service that I was happy to provide.

Maybe Micky is just a damn communist.

Modern English School - Egypt

I just read the latest negative review on MES - Egypt and once again from a tired and disgruntled teacher.
I taught for a year at MES and I loved it! The place was a complete zoo and ripe for a good long dawdle.

I was amazed how so many of the other teachers went home sad, exhausted and broken.
I thought it was one of the world's best places to work. Over the course of a year, I did absolutely nothing and get on great with the students. The owner was a sweet old lady from Jordan and she paid her teachers an excellent salary plus benefits and all she really wanted was for the teachers to keep the kids happy, which was easy enough.

I think so many international school teachers take themselves and their career so seriously that miss out on just how much fun and how financially rewarding a school like MES can be.
