After tax? That is about 300,000 RMB per year or about 25K RMB per month. That is a ton of money for Chengdu dude. I make about 28K after taxes and it is way more than I can spend.

Re: Venezuela vs. Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is a rough post dude. I have worked there before. The winters are long and harsh, the food is not so great unless you like borscht, horse meat, lagman, or a lot of beet root. The Kazakh people were not friendly in the least. Maybe it is different at QSI but when I worked for NIS it was a nightmare. If you want more information PM me and I will fill you in on what I know.

Re: Best/Easiest/Cheapest country to buy a vacation condo?

In the Philippines to own the land you have to be married to a Filipino. That being said many people I know get a 99 year lease on the land. You can easily buy a condo in the Philippines as a foreigner. Your still going to be looking at $25,000-$50,000 US on the low end to buy a brand new condo or house, but that depends on location as well. Manila is a nice city. I will probably retire there, or Cebu. Maybe Bohol there are so many great places to choose from. Condos in Manila are not a bad investment either, lots of other foreigners live there, and prices are good for renting out the condo. Just make sure to only rent to good people. Anyway for my two cents Philippines is the best choice.

Re: air quality in Shanghai a concern?

I work in Chengdu China, but my head office is in Shanghai, and I have to travel there often. The air quality is shockingly bad, but this is just not Shanghai all over China the air quality is poor, and as someone with asthma I always look at the aqi air quality checker on my ipad before I go outside. I have also lived in southwest Asia, Bangkok, and manila and at the time I thought the air pollution was bad, but now that I live here their is really no comparison. China's air is downright dangerous at times.

China is a strange and wonderful place. Everyday I both hate and love it. It is not for everyone, but everyone should try it for themselves.

Re: getting a job with a non-teaching spouse and 3 children

I have some friends doing this right now; it is possible. Your earning potential will have to be more, and in order to gain enough money, and you might have to think about some locations that others would pass up. Also if you are a qualified teacher for an in need subject area this too might sway the decision in your favor.

Re: Student Loan Payments

Back on topic, I am a 1st generation college grad from my family as well. In college I got into some credit card debit as well; stupid I know, but at the time I was young and inexperienced with credit. So one of my major reasons for leaving the US was to make enough money to be debt free. After a few years working abroad I was able to pay off all of my credit card debt, and I am now on my last 10k of student loan debt. I am pretty proud as it took a lot of effort, but in the end I will be happier being debt free. I also considered (briefly) defaulting on my loans, but I am glad I did not do that as now my credit rating is good in the US, and as a recently married man my wife and I are considering buying a home in America, and I could never had done that if I had chosen the wrong path. My humble opinion pay off the debt as soon as possible.

Re: Contacting Schools

There is definitely right way to do it, but I have always been bold in my approach. I don't know if that is the right way but I try every maneuver I can to land the position that I want. Sometimes it backfires, but I always ending getting a good position at the end of the day.

Re: Thailand Schools

I worked in BKK a few years ago. I made about 100K per month, and that was plenty of money for me and my wife who wasnt teaching at the time. We had a super nice condo, and life in Bangkok is pretty sweet. Even though I make about double that here in China now I I would go back to BKK in a heartbeat.

Also for finding a job if you want British schools I would look at TES the Times Education Supplement, as they post some good jobs there. I would also recommend joining TIE the international educator job site; they have good opening on that site. Finally search associates is also a good website to join for finding jobs. There are also many many many other jobs sites out there with varying degrees of quality.

Also yes there are special education jobs out there you just have to look for them.
