Re: Shrewsbury International School reviews?

I've sent you a message, Quijanotango. First or second tier, it's one of the top 4-5 in BKK in my opinion.

Re: French American School SF vs. British School Houston

Thanks Indogal. I know about the UK qualified staff bit, and I actually asked about that. I'm simply still on their system and am not (as of yet!) unsuccessful, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks also for the info on the admin at French American School. Always good to hear positives!

French American School SF vs. British School Houston

Hi All,

still on the job search and was wondering if anyone knew anything about the French American School in San Francisco or British School Houston. I know a LITTLE about the packages, but more interested in the school culture. Thanks for any help as we continue to find that elusive next post!

Re: salary for china

I have a family of four and save quite a lot of money in Beijing (which is probably one of the most expensive areas in China). And I'm nowhere near 46K RMB/month. You will be fine is my guess, unless you have about 20KRMB/mo in bills back home. Still, you'd be fine after that.
If it's a good job and school for your children, take it!

Re: Is it just me .......

I'm in a similar position to lemonlilly in that I may be moving back to the US, but a different one (maybe) in that many of my decisions this recruiting season have been based on my child's own education…also, I am a single teacher with 3 dependents so that's probably not helping the case. I've only turned down one offer but there's not much left out there in my subject area. We've seen quite a few posts this year, but most of the best ones (Tier 1 schools, I would say) were taken early by (I'm guessing) singles or teaching couples.
In any case, we're still going forward and hoping for a great post to materialize - always the optimist!

Re: Please help me from getting discouraged!

Hi Cyndioeo,

first of all, I'm 45, have 14 years of IS experience, went to an earlier fair and am only now getting anything resembling interest. At the fair, I was offered 2 interviews and got nothing. Applied to a fair number of schools since, and had nothing for a few weeks. And all of a sudden, this past week, have been offered 3 interviews (one in a school that I'd applied for back in December and heard nothing back) with schools in completely different areas of the world. All three schools would be great for me and the family (wife and 2 children), each with a different draw. No "Tier 1's" (as far as I know), but all great schools for different reasons based completely on my situation.

Having only moved schools twice before, what I've learnt is that I have always ended up where I was meant to. Maybe not where I WANTED to be but definitely where I was meant to. The first time, I had a job by early January; the second time, it took until mid-April; this time, the only reason I've been contacted by the December school is that they MAY have a part-time position for my spouse (IF they accept the fact that she is an experienced, NON-certified teacher in her field); having 2 children an a non-teaching spouse is a tough sell nowadays, but it IS do-able (I hope!)

So realize that there is a job out there with your name on it. I agree with most on here that we teachers don't ever know the "BIG PICTURE" that Admininstrators have to deal with. So trust that you will fit into somebody's big picture if you are willing to wait.

Hi mac,

thanks for that, but this is the position that was filled before I even got the chance to ask for an interview.

Congrats to all those who have secured positions at this fair, but for me, it was not meant to be.

Still, being a positive type, the Fair was one more experience in moving me towards my next post, wherever that may be.

I did in the end have one serious interview and one that I felt was not very genuine (from a tier 1 school) as the recruiter made me wait for about 25 minutes from my scheduled time and then informed of something that I assume would be a deal-breaker for just about anyone (only 1 of 3 dependents paid for, so I'd end up paying for 2 airfares and one tuition fee). Still, it was my fault, as the policy WAS stated on the Search page, so my fault for not noticing it.

What is amazing, though, is that at the end of all of this, there is now an opportunity that had nothing to do with the Fair that has popped up today…fate? Who knows…we'll see over the next few months and I'll keep looking around the world…it's a big place!

Hi Durianfan,

IB experience: 5 years DP experience

BUT, remember, British system experience and looking hard for choral jobs. The ones I thought I could get interviews for either went away before I got a chance to ask at the tables or were in schools that didn't hire single teachers w/dependents.

Now on to tomorrow and hitting my interviews hard…as always, we'll see what tomorrow brings!

Wow…sort of dumbfounded at this point. With only 2 interviews now, VERY worried…

Went to the interview sign-up and went straight for my dream school's table…and found that my position had already been filled.

Went around to the other tables and ended up with 2 interviews, one with an amazing school and one with a very good school in a location I may not be willing to go…but we'll see…

Now to prepare…LOTS to do. Disappointed that the dream school is gone, but feeling hopeful that the other two schools are a good fit for all concerned!

ooh! Glad I took a flyer on a school! One that I'm interested in didn't have the job on their postings hanging from the wall, so I assumed that the position was gone. Went to the beginning of the presentation to ask about it, and was told that it is, in fact, still open and told to come to sign up today! Commence the craziness!

Start of Day 2 - a few more schools to present, and then off to the interview sign-ups. Nothing showing up in the mailbox, so starting to worry a bit. Will have to pull out all the stops to get a few interviews!

Candidate orientation, done. Nothing in the mailbox as of yet. One "dream job" off the board, but I've still put in my request to interview JUST in case!

Have requested a few interviews and now will go to the presentations this afternoon and tomorrow morning before the interview sign-up session tomorrow.

There are a LOT of people here…hahahaha…over 100 schools; not a huge number of jobs in my area, but not a lot of candidates in my area either. Going for lunch and then off to the presentations.

Day 1: Well, it's started! Have had 2 e-mails from schools, 1 from a school I approached on the Search e-mail system and one unsolicited - for something I have not considered in terms of even teaching. Maybe you really DID just have to wait until the Fair started. These are my first two pieces of correspondence!
