For sure got the royal treatment being a single American man, but it was more from the fact that a dollar still means something and if you have a 20 in your pocket you're pretty loaded.

I think it's worth the effort to get in CA or SA. I'm in Asia now, but a day doesn't go by when I don't dream of going back to Colombia. It's great to make money, but for me the lifestyle difference and the ability to immerse myself in the local culture is worth being broke.

I think you need to take an aggresive approach and contact as many schools as possible. A position like this most likely would be filled by a local hire in a Latin American school. I would also think these types of jobs are in less existence in LA then other regions, just based on that LA structures can be quite different from the norm. I did a stint in both CA and SA and I never came across an expat in your position (but I'm sure they exist).

I know a few years back I was the only gringo A.D. south of Mexico in CA so I tend to believe specialist positions are rare for foreigners.

Good luck!

It's better this happened now rather then next year when your stuck with a totally lame school. You should move off the regret of taking the sub job and not waiting. You just speed up process of this school showing you that it's bad news. Shrug it off and move on.

I know it's tough, but if your dynamic enough you'll find something. I found my current job at a solid tier 2 school, one week into the school year on TIE. I returned to teaching after I took a year off for a failed business attempt. I waited till late July to look and I had two offers in early August. I even got promoted into my dream position the second year here.

Good luck!

I don't live in China, but I think it's a great idea and service.

I'm in Taiwan and it would be work well with the 20 or so international schools here.

Good work.

I'm single and live not so frugally on around 30,000 NT a month in Kaoshiung which is cheaper then Taipei, but not much if you're not hitting clubs or going out to eat a lot.

I know nothing about supporting a family, but I'd say 60K could easily work if you're ultra frugal on your food costs and entertainment.

I do agree with IAMBOG in that one of Taiwan's upsides is its location to reach the rest of Asia quite simply and there is no way a family of four could travel a lot.

Mathteacher is correct on 60K being low, as that is what around an English teacher would get in most language schools in Taiwan.

If you're serious about your pre-planning you should just invite a few international teachers who are in HK, China or Taiwan to come check out what you have in mind.

I'll take care of my own flight for a weekend, if you pay for a decent hotel and a really expensive meal. You can show me why a teacher would want to live there and I'll give you my viewpoint.

P.E. background + coaching experience would help greatly. I've held a few A.D. positions in international schools and that was the background I used to get in. I feel my coaching and player experience has really helped the most in my job. I got my first job at a fair and it has seemed like the door is open to find an A.D. position worldwide, if a school doesn't hire internally there is not much competition.

Yep, I've seen the underbelly of Bogota. I lived in Candelaria and have walked those streets plenty of time at 4 AM. I've also spent a lot of time South of Septima and down Calle 19 about 2 miles past the Septima and have seen some pretty sketchy stuff. I look like a thug and have lived in Latin American for awhile to allow me to survive these places.

Not sure if many tourist or foreigners living in Bogota will be in these areas and have to worry about crime. I think the perception that Colombia is a horrible place is way off. I'd say its the same as any other Latin American country or big city U.S.A.

I rode my motorcycle around the country for two years and never had an issue. I feel safer in the country then I do the States, the only difference is your stuff can get jacked if you're not careful.

I even enjoyed Colombia so much I published a book on it.
