How were the recent fairs.

Just wondering what the general vibe at the fairs were, especially the latest ISS. I have heard many people complaining that the fairs had an extra couples only emphasis this year and that jobs were not as abundant as predicted. Did you experience the same?

From my experience and from what I have heard from others, schools are not hiring at the earliers fairs. I attended the AASSA fair this year and many people left disappointed. Many jobs that were posted on their website were actually not available the day of the fair and many candidates left being told that recruiters still had many other fairs to attend and that they would get back to them.

Guilt trips from home

To those of you who have been living abroad for several years...
do you ever feel guilty for being away from family and life-long friends for so long???? Best friend's children who don't know you, losing the last few years with a grandparent? The fact that I am late 30s, single and according to some at home, "losing all roots." I have an international soul but often the internal and projected guilt I am sent leave me in conflict.

I am wondering if there is a significant number of people who get hired outside of the fairs. I have heard mixed options with some experienced teachers sending out tons of pre-fair resumes that got zero response and schools that say they only do face to face interviews. I would love to avoid the cost of going to a fair but feel I really have no choice. Going to AASSA to try to beat the rush.

Yes, I would love to know these answers too. The AASSA website lists the schools that are members but does that mean that all the member schools will be at the fair? If my goal is to work in South America, I assume this is the best fair for me?

Just curious. Does the real lack of replies mean that there are no over 30 singles out there ?????

Single Females

This question was previously asked with no response. I want to pose it again and put a little spin on it. This question is about being a single international educator and more specific a single female. I am a single female in my late 30s and wonder if in chosing to be an international educator I also chose to remain single. In my experience, many cultures outside of North American look with pity on an older single female. I find that many men are interested in North American woman as a "fun" time but that they are not to be taken seriously. I am wondering if others have had this experience and if a life of advenuture abroad often remains a solo adventure for woman over 30. Any opinions or insights?

June Fairs

Can anyone share their experience with attending the June fairs? Are there still good location available or it is mostly remote or more dangerous locations? Do they reallly have school attending from all parts of the world?

Too late for 2008-2009

Just wondering what the odds are of finding an elementary post this late in the game? I am especially interested in South America? Will the only jobs remaining be with non-desirable schools?

Thanks for the info. My past experience has been in private schools and contracts were only one year. The whole two years is a bit scary as it can be a long time to be stuck in a place you really dont like. This site is useful for some places, but many schools have no information and it total chance.
