Just to put it out there, marrying a Swiss does not equal an easy Swiss passport (especially if you don't live in the country at the moment). It can take years until they consider you for a passport (and you need to speak one of the main languages as well). :)
Good luck on your job search in Scotland!

Re: Complete newbie with questions (of course! ;) )
Hi Shadowjack,
We are aware (after doing some research) that he will be challenged in this position...fingers crossed that it ends well like your term did! He teaches primary grades, so that makes a (tiny) bit of difference (we hope). Thank you for the online info. we will definitely check that out!
What grade(s) did you teach over there? Did you find that the school was overall nice & helpful with your challenges?
Best,
JustBean

Re: Complete newbie with questions (of course! ;) )
Thanks for your reply!
We would definitely have been up for more of a variety of places a few years ago...we have traveled and moved around a lot on our own and are ready to "settle in" so to speak :)
I do agree with you...there are a TON of amazing places to experience out there in the international teaching front!
A nice opportunity came our way to teach in London, so we are heading somewhere we never expected to for the next two years (and a *little* closer to where we want to end up ;) ). We are really excited!
Best,
JustBean

@shadowjack
Good to know! Thank you :)
Our international teaching is focusing on only two countries, so it is a bit of a different journey for our family. My husband has all the international schools that he is interested in from both countries on file with all their info. etc and a CV tailored to each one accordingly. He will just keep trying to email the schools directly when they have openings (elementary). In the mean time, get experience here in ON teaching...we have also been looking into an IB certificate that might help in getting a job next year.
Fingers crossed for everyone that hasn't heard anything yet and YAY! congratulations to those that have found what they were looking for :)

1kingston- Just curious if Search is aware that you are not graduating until April 2014? I only ask because my husband (who is in the same boat as you, graduating in April in Ontario too) signed up with them, upon further correspondence was then told that they could not actually do anything for him until he graduates (eg let him go to the fairs or help promote him to schools). He was refunded no problem and plans on signing back up with them again once he does finish up in April.
Not trying to stir up trouble, just wanted to make you aware of a potential issue for going to fairs.
All the best to you in your job search!

"Nothing...not even a nibble from the emails and resumes I've sent...but I'm new to all of this...and el ed...not going to think too much about it until after the job fair."
Newchapter,
My husband is totally new to this as well...what do you mean by "not even a nibble"? I know this seems like a silly question, but are emails that say "Thanks, not hiring right now, but we will keep you on file etc..." "nibbles"? We have gotten a few of those and a couple that asked about him being interested in a certain position (other than the one he applied for).
We were just wondering if those were good signs (we so need some hope :) ) or the norm?
One school was so nice and sent a personal email saying that they can't consider him yet, because he has not graduated yet, but they would love for him to keep them in mind and re-apply next year etc...it was very nice and encouraging.
Wishing you much luck in your search!

Nomads,
Thank you so much for your reply and your opinion...we knew going into this that it would be very tough competition and that the lack of actual teaching experience would be a big set back.
We are prepared (with heavy hearts) to stay in Canada for two more years for him to gain the experience working as a teacher here...and try again...and again...and again (if need be) :)
We definitely have our fingers (and toes!) crossed though...he has sent out a number of resumes/CV's to all kinds of international schools in Germany & CH (large and small)...maybe a miracle is due? :)
Thank you for taking the time!

Complete newbie with questions (of course! ;) )
Hi there,
My husband and I are completely new to international teaching. (He will be the one teaching).
We are pretty tunnel visioned on our country choices (either Switzerland (our first choice and where we plan on settling) or Germany).
He graduates this April (2014) from teacher's college. We have a 3 year old dependent. I don't teach.
He has a year teaching experience (teacher assistant to special needs children), an honours degree in Psychology and a Counseling degree. Also a year with mentoring at risk youth.
I am a Swiss/Canadian dual citizen (as is our son) and my husband is Canadian.
I guess my question is...do we stand a chance?
He sent out his resume/CV and we have gotten a view "nibbles", but who knows?
*I guess I need a little hope thrown our way :(
