Art Vacancies

Post by Nomadic Teacher »

Hi All

I notice there are A LOT of art jobs for ES, MS and HS levels. This is great news for me, but am wondering if there are many art teachers looking for jobs now too?

Why are there so many art jobs this year?

Thanks!

It’s cyclical.
Whereas schools have many many teachers for English or math or primary, they have relatively few for other areas like art, music, library. Sometimes as low as one per school. So while we can safely presume lots of open spots every year for English etc, it’s a bookie’s risk to predict vacancies in the others. If a few more librarians than normal decide to move, their market opens up.
Yes, you can expect competition for those spots.

I agree mostly with @Sid, its just cyclical, but there is also an increase in art ITs as the trend now is to have fewer whole school ITs which is seen within IE as a developing or small IS, so ISs are expanding whole school enrichment vacancies in staffing in the case of art this has translated to moving from a whole school art position to at a minimum primary and secondary art positions.

I am glad art has not been entirely discontinued by MakerSpace mania. At too many schools libraries, labs, and art rooms have been destroyed and in their place 3D printers and cork floors. Vile.

@reisgio

Concur, the pop.ed fad of mingling design tech and art could stand some serious segregation.
