Teach Now not accepted in Thailand?

Post by chiliverde »

Plan has been for husband, French citizen, two masters (neither in education) to become certified via Teach Now. An international school just told us today that Thailand does not recognize Teach Now because it is not issued by a university. Has anyone heard of this and can help?

Universities do NOT issue teaching certification. Governments do - so States in the USA, Provinces in Canada, UK government, Scottish government, Welsh government and Northern Ireland government in the UK.

Yes, but the university where you did your studies is still on your CV and the fact that Teach Now is (apparently) not part of a proper university can be a reason for a country to not grant a working visa.

Yes, thank you - of course this is true. I can't make any sense of their answer, unless the problem is that he won't have an education degree from any institution. But how can this possibly be a problem in Thailand of all places, with a million schools and where you just need a BA to work in a government school?

@Sj isnt correct, but its not that the intent is in error its in the use of the term 'certificate'. Many Unis issue certificate, the PGCE from England is a very common certificate issued by a Uni for teaching. In th US you ill find a number of programs (edX for example) that will issue certificate for a small handful of courses within a program sequence (such as Ed.Tech, etc.). Credentials as in specifically professional educator credentials (not all credentials are educator credentials, such as School Bus Driver or Chief Business Finance Officer credentials, etc.) are issued by regulating authorities whether they be the TCL/TRA in England, the various councils in the UK, DOEs in the US, or various MOEs around the globe (no snub intended for CAN or AUS).

Who in Thailand doesnt recognize Teach Now, and doesnt recognize them for what? You need a bachelors/first degree to get a Thai visa and then you need to do the cultures course to maintain, renew it. Those are out of the ministries labor and immigration. Are they referring to a thai edu credential out of the MOE? That could be true, but ISs arent required to hire solely those with a thai edu credential.
What exactly are they restricting? Is it the EPP/ITT program that Teach Now provides, or is it the DC credential (its a professional grade credential)? if its the EPP/ITT pathway is it only Teach Now or does it apply to all skills based pathways (AO, Teach Ready, etc.)?
How is this being enforced? Is it based on a resume, okay change the resume and put the Educator School of Education or well any University in DC or just leave it out. Is it transcripts or a copy of a degree?

While Im familiar with the Thai MOE and their credentialing scheme, I dont know how this would apply to a private/independent IS, and even if it did how the MOE would isolate one such credential provider in one jurisdiction. This sounds more like this one IS not wanting to go through the work for a non-NES IT.

An edu degree isnt a requirement for a Thai visa.
