Which subjects can you teach with Political Science degree?

Post by Heliotrope »

After getting QTS, what subjects would you be able to teach with a Bachelors degree in Political Science?

Are those subjects taught at many schools, and is there a surplus or a shortage of teachers for those subjects on the international circuit?

Thanks in advance!

IB Global Politics and IGCSE Global Perspectives stand out as the obvious ones - depending on the content of your degree, you could also teach History and Geography, and maybe Economics too. History and Geography are the most commonly taught, with Economics just behind and IB Global Politics starting to make a breakthrough.

However, these are far from shortage subjects - like in the UK, humanities teachers are ten-a-penny. Particularly in Asia, they tend to be the subjects that the parents (though not so much the students) don't really understand why we do them.

Concur with @expatscot, IB Global Politics (and if you can get a position with the Pamoja, the online course Information Technology in a Global Society) and IGCSE Global Perspectives, add Citizenship Studies, Global Development, Government and Politics, at A levels, Government and Politics and Global Perspectives for CPU, and Government and Politics for AP.
Those subjects though are all very niche, from a practical position it would be extremely difficult to make a FTE appointment solely out of those course offerings within an ISs curriculum. An IT would typically have to be competent and comfortable with other upper/senior secondary subjects or broad social studies (history focused) in lower/junior secondary subjects. In practice an IT that teaches this is going to have one or two sections depending on the sequence for the curriculum in Poli and then other social studies or humanities subjects such as social science or history (and in lower secondary could be combined with language arts/literature).

To be marketable you would want to be able to spin your resume to additional subjects such as economics or history and geography (ASs tend to have American and world history, and BSs world history and geography) to fill out a schedule and be marketable to a recruiter.
These subjects arent in high demand (Poli is a very small niche field) and there is a high degree of saturation for broad subject humanities and social studies ITs.

Being able to do Model UN would probably also help. Currently teaching AP US and Comparative Politics at my school, as well as a Grade 12 combination class of Comparative Politics and Economics. My first degree is History however.

@jbiersteker

Assuming the IS needed someone to run MUN.
