Abu Dhabi is a decent place to live and work and save. We cannot comment on schools in this forum. Join the members part of the site and seriously read the reviews about ENS!

Basically everything worth doing costs coin, and the central recreation activity is shopping.

@PsyGuy that is true but AD is an easy location to work in in the ME. If housing is taken care of and you can cope with a quiet life its not the worst place to make a sheckle. Finding a decent school is the challenge. Lots of snakepits or bad administrators to avoid.

No its not the worse, but its getting close to it considering there are lots of more attractive regions with less adverse and potentially hostile work environments if all you want to do is coast through a quite day and make some coin.

Living the expat life in the UAE can be very easy. You have the ability to drive across the country and to Oman. Lots of expat groups offer cultural excursions, or you can just spend the weekend at the beach. You can join sports clubs (rugby is great!), or take in the theater. Yes, shopping is plentiful - but you have so many more options. You can live cheaply or expensively - depends if you spend your weekends at brunch and shopping at Spinneys or eating locally and visit the souk for your produce. Your ability to travel is expanded with Abu Dhabi and Dubai being the hub to so many other places.

Those are all ordinary activities.

- You can drive across and in a lot of places. So what, theres nothing interesting in Oman thats worth driving too.
- Lots of locations have various associations and clubs for sports or theater. You can do that anywhere.
- Youre an IT who is working in a foreign country, you are already part of a cultural excursion.
- Lots of places to go to the beach and lots of better beaches.
- There are much better international travel hubs.

Teacher28 wanted information about living in Abu Dhabi. I gave him information, not comments on his choice.

Driving - some countries have closed boarders where you can't cross. UAE has a wide range of terrain to visit across the Emirates. Mountains to beaches to the Empty Quarter.
Oman - great country to visit with very friendly people. Lots to do - explore wadis, drive the coast, snorkel/dive in Muscat, etc.
Clubs - just putting it out there so that he is aware of some things that are available.
Cultural excursions- just because you are teaching in a foreign country does not mean you are part of the experience. UAE provides groups that will take day or weekend trips to visit forts, date farms, bull pushing, etc. Local families are welcoming and will invite you to their celebrations or to visit their farms.
Beaches - UAE provides a wide range of beaches from Jumeirah to Dibba.
Travel hub- UAE offers many travel choices that a western expat may not have experienced before. Lots of places to visit within a four hour flight.

Its not information about Abu Dhabi its ordinary activities that apply everywhere.

What borders and where, because the countries I know of with such practices arent worth going to, the others require passports and possibly visas, which take all of a few minutes and youre on your way. Theres nothing special about an absence of border security.

Your description of Oman I find to be untrue, and even if it was, it still describes a lot of places.
Evening social activities such as clubs are in lots of places.
Touristy stuff and organized groups that participate in them are also everywhere.
Forts are what old building soldiers used to live at?
Date farms are patches of dirt that dates grow in.
Bull Pushing, is that like lazy cow tipping?
Yeah but its a farm whats there to visit, its dirt and plants.
Hospitality is found everywhere.
Walk anywhere long enough and you will find a beach in so much as you eventually you will find the point that land meets the water, our planet is 70% water. There are beaches everywhere.
There are lot of places to visit within 4 hours of a lot of places. Again, ordinary.
