Single Mom Question

Post by Chinagirl »

I am currently in the process of adopting a child. I am an elementary teacher with a masters degree and am currently in my third overseas post. I am now working at an excellent school in China and will likely stay here for a few more years. I will eventually move on and wonder how recruiting as a single mother will be. Will there be fewer opportunities for me with a dependent? I would be very interested in hearing from other single parents out there in the international teaching circuit. Thanks.

I am a single mom with two children and this has never hurt my chances to find an overseas positon. I have been at 4 schools in the past 10 years. My kids have received an excellent education. With just one child, expeciall a child that will be in the lower grades, you should have no problems at all.

I'm a single dad with an elementary age son, whom I also adopted, and have not had any problem finding positions in overseas schools. Besides, schools for which having a child is looked upon as a problem would not be worth working for under any circumstance.

Congratulations and the best of everything to you and your daughter!

I appreciate your comments very much. The only other single parents with dependents I have known have been specialists.

Hello,

I'm very interested in this thread. I'm 40 and single and have wanted to teach in International Schools for a while, but I know the social situation for older women is not exactly promising. I taught English in Taiwan in my 20's and the western guys were either attached or interested only in the local women.

Is my assessment of the situation accurate? I don't know, maybe there's a "singles board" for international school teachers? : )

Returning to the original subject - I will probably consider adopting, like the OP, and it's nice to know that it wouldn't be a detriment to teaching in international schools.

I lived in Thailand for two years and found the men were there to meet Thai women. At that time in my life I was just coming out of a bad relationship and I enjoyed the fact that men left me alone. I am now, however, over that period in my life and living in Ecuador. The problem here is that everyone gets married at 22 years old. The only men I meet are the ones looking for a relationship outside their marriage. Each culture seems to have its own ups and downs for single women. I have a young daughter and have found that over the past ten years she has never prevented or stood in the way of someone offering me a position. I think having a child is actually an asset as you become more involved in the school through your child. Anyone who would not hire me due to my child is someone I would want to avoid, anyway.

The relationship thing is about what I expected. Maybe I would just spend my summers elsewhere, back home in the U.S. for example.

Seriously though, is there a dating website for international teachers? My ideal match would be another teacher like me who would like to teach overseas. And NO, not just because it would make it easier to get jobs! ; )

Maybe no men would join such a website. Hmm. Any single (older) men out there not in it to date the locals?
