Re: Ranking of subjects, from most in demand to least in dem

It's an IB course: https://www.ibo.org/programmes/diploma- ... -languages
If you go and search for IB schools on their website, and search for the keyword 'classical languages' (or 'latin'), you get 210 hits: https://bit.ly/2Y0z9pP
Of course there are also non-IB schools that offer it.

It might very well be that the Latin teachers are all teaching it part-time, so if you can also teach another subject, you'd be more marketable.

Perhaps someone who's on this forum and has an active Search profile can see if there are any vacancies in Classical Languages or Latin right now (although it's late in the recruiting season)? Just so you know if there's a demand...

Don't bother, he will never admit he's wrong anyway, when it's often clear to everyone that he is.

You're 100% correct.
I'm mostly responding for those who are not regular readers, and a bit because I can't help myself.

Hmmm, 'referring to in your mind'??
No, actual words on the screen:

So I'll stop responding now, as the OP isn't helped by this clashing of egos.

If you'd read my comments, you'd see that I was referring to you suddenly mentioning "exceptionalism or special interest provisions" and "when a shortage of professionals exist", in your comment immediately AFTER @Thames Pirate posted her sources.
You know, 'after', not 'before'.

Maybe first read my comment before replying to it.
If you had, you'd see that I wrote that you didn't mention that until AFTER @Thames Pirate came up with sources which showed that being in a civil service DT position in a German DS isn't good enough.

Re: 50 and over can not be hired in Germany?

Oh, I didn't realise you simply forgot (or for some weird reason chose not) to mention the "exceptionalism or special interest provisions" then, and only mentioned that you have to "be a civil service DT position in a German DS", until @Thames Pirate came up with sources which showed that being in a civil service DT position in a German DS isn't good enough.

Agree with @shadowjack, getting IB experience at a tier 2 school is a good move if you want to end up at a tier 1 school, as over 80% of schools that most would consider tier 1 (there's no official list of course) offer IBDP, as well as 6 out of 7 of the schools on your list.

Re: Applying as an admin/teacher couple: How competitive are

I agree with @sid.
I always like to stay positive, but I really think you're not competitive enough for any of those schools.
The schools you mention are on pretty much everyone's list (although The American International School of Muscat is not up there with the rest of them, in my opinion), and a lot of the people who will be interested in the same positions will be way more competitive than you.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't apply (miracles do happen, and perhaps for one of them you will be exactly what they're looking for at that moment), but it does mean you should also apply at a whole lot of other schools, including schools that are less desirable. There are loads of charming and interesting but lesser known schools out there, some with great savings potential, others with an inspiring academic environment, some in awesome cities, and even a few with all of the above (for example, you mention a school in Taipei, but there's another IS in Taipei, which is great as well, just less well-known, although that one would still be a reach).
Cast a wide net, see which of the schools will interview you, and then pick the best of the offers.

You also might want to consider looking at cities where you can both apply at different schools, and not both at the same, as sometimes a specific combo of vacancies is hard to find, especially if one of them isn't 'Early Years teacher'. Cities like Bangkok and Singapore have tons of schools, so perhaps you can both get jobs there, just not at the same school.

Good luck!

Re: Reply

Uhm, you initially stated:
"but you would have to be in the rare position of a civil service DT position in a German DS"

Then you said:
"Yes you can, it use to be 50 when the retirement age was 65, now its 52 with the retirement age moving to 67."

Your talk of the 'exceptionalism or special interest provisions' didn't begin until @Thames Pirate proved you wrong about your initial position, so you moved the goalpost to try and make it look like she didn't.

Anyway, neither of you two will be able to convince the other, and it's my guess that @Thames Pirate has convinced the majority of the rest of us.

Sources please.
I'm inclined to believe @Thames Pirate, as she can read German, but perhaps @PsyGuy can post a link to a source that will prove he's right.

According to @PsyGuy, it's meant for "content filtering for spam against all those get rich quick scams".
Not sure if that's indeed the actual reason, as I don't see how that would help much, and those scams are easily identified anyway. But then again, I can't think of any other reason, so it might just be true.

On weekends?!
That's definitely not inherent to British ISs.
None of the British ISs have ever asked this of me, or anyone I know working at various ISs.

Actually, I usually got home earlier from my British schools than from the non-British ones.

There is more prep involved though, as you will teach more different classes. Not sure why British schools do that. I like teaching different ages and topics, but I can do without the extra prep.
