Re: Not really
I wouldnt teach/live there (unless it was a lot of money). GEMS has a very for profit corporate atmosphere and while its a very western city, its very expensive. Depending on your package you could lead a "nice" life but youll never be able to really indulge in the lifestyle there.
For a single guy who doesn't go extravagant on shopping and other pursuits but enjoys the odd meal out and meet up with some friends, how much would I be able to save from a salary of 12,000 AED per month?

i have never worked there, but do know a teacher that has and have also been making enquiries about the school.

Firstly, this particular Regents School has been taken over by the Nord Anglia groups of schools. It no longer has close links to the school of the same name in BKK.

It is a boarding school as far as I know and is a number of miles outside the quite seedy city of Pattaya. They offer a reasonable salary (but not the best) and quite modest living allowances. However, this may be changing with the new school ownership.

Danny, I am very interested in the school you mention. I, however, will have my NQT year out of the way by the end of this year. Any hints as to the school?

I was under the impression that St Andrew's were a decent school that paid relatively well (starting at around 90k plus housing). They were considered just above the likes of Regents, St Stephen's et al.

Surprized that it is only considered a third tier school.

Sangster, like myself, would ideally like a sort of list of some of the schools that may fit into this category. Has anyone any experience of such schools? Schools that do not work the life out of you, schools that let you have a life outside school.

I don't think he/she wants to get into a debate of the tiers or what constitutes 1st, 2nd and 51st tier etc.

A decent school with decent benefits that doesn't demand you to work into an early grave.

From what I gather. tiers in different countries are not the same. e.g. a 2nd tier school in Thailand may very well be first tier in another country. However, as so many point out, tiers are subjective.
