Re: Africa with small kids
If I had kids a bit older, maybe 10+ I would love to live in lots of places in Africa with them. Really small kids I would probably be a bit more concerned about malaria, so I might prefer to go to higher altitude places like Nairobi or Addis... Then again, I'm not a doctor ;)

Re: Questions about entering Administration...
Yeah, that's some really bizarre ageism. Of course people get better as they get more experience, assuming they actually care about their job. If your statement is correct, I might as well keel over and die at 40, which will be when I have ten years of experience.

Shooting @ Colegio Americano de Noroeste
So, there's been a school shooting (by a student, nothing to do with the drug war) at Colegio Americano de Noroeste. If anyone on the forum works there, I hope you're okay. I didn't realize these types of American-style student shootings every happened in international schools.

Re: Firing
You're right, not having a contract extended isn't really the same thing, and that wasn't what I was talking about, but now that I think about it, isn't that a soft form of firing?

Firing
Hello, here is my curiosity of the day:
How often does your school fire people? Is it a common occurrence at your school? When it happens, is it usually deserved? Is it a reflection of poor hiring practices, or low teacher support?
At both international schools I've worked for, one third tier, one first, both in Latin America, firing seemed quite common. More often than not it is understandable, although usually I feel like it could have been avoided by hiring someone better (ie more expensive / experienced / qualified / better references) to begin with.
I'm not worried myself, as all indicators say I'm respected here, but it does lead to slightly low morale. Thoughts?

Yes, my school also gives a week off for recruiting. My school is lower tier one or upper tier two, probably.

Maybe the powers that be at ISR could add it as a third forum. Could be interesting...

Re: University faculty transitioning to international school
A lot of people I know who transitioned from university to K-12 couldn't hack it. Some could, though! Just stay open to the fact that it's a totally different game.

Re: Cameroon and Ethiopa
Fun fact: Africa is a continent with over 50 countries, with variety as wide as Russia to Spain in Europe, or Japan to Sri Lanka. There are some countries in Africa that would require an armed escort, but most do not.

How would you figure it out?
Then again, if anyone I work with is on this forum (I don't... think so) I think I'm distinctive enough that they could figure me out. Shoot!

Ha! The first time I've agreed with certain people.
If you are single, go to Bogota. Latin America is great for dating for both men and women.

Re: Countries where age discrimination is not a thing
México as long as you START under 60. You can continue working after that. In general Latin America seems to respect older teachers... As long as you're not a super expensive hire.
