Re: Pet peeve of mine

Add to the peeves when a recruiter simply lies and say he/she has chosen to go in another direction and as a result selected another candidate for the position....and then a few days later the position is re-listed with a new application due date!

Has Winter Break Already Started?

I have noticed a big drop in interview/outreach activity from schools in the last week. Not just to me, but to other teachers I am close to/work with. Are winter break festivities distracting admin this time of year and for those like me is it just a "to be continued" situation until school is back in January? I was hoping to finally get a contract before winter break, but seems not in the cards again this time around. Related, have any of you gotten offers between December 10 and December 25 before? And similarly, when do the heads start offering again in the new year? The second week or do they just wait until the fairs now that they've gotten this far? Good Lawd! I can't believe I may have to go to a fair again. I don't want to end up like Whitney in the bathtub at that fair hotel with no offer. :-( :-\

A contract with a car?

I started dating someone last school year at my school who is currently interviewing for principal positions. He has had a few interviews and I was shocked when he told me a couple of the packages came with cars! But he was completely unfazed by this. Is a car typical for certain positions? Are there certain regions where it's more likely than others? I really want him to be interested in European jobs, but do any of those come with cars?! Or if I stay with him am I going to have to settle for a nice contract, a car, and a view of an African slum?

Re: Planning ahead. How can I become an IT in Germany?

All of my American friends in Germany can't wait to get out because of the sick tax situation. It actually explains a lot about Germans' masochism that they put up with it, but it's completely off the hook for expats there.

Re: Paris

@PsyGuy

How would you counter if I told you that at one of those top schools in Paris, many expat employs stay for 15+ years. At that point, if you see yourself as capable of pulling that off and not being replaced so fast (like you posit), wouldn't there be some up side to working at that school and living in Paris. It can't be that bad with relatively long tenures of a diverse mix of expat employees. Can it?

Re: Rio and EARJ

Please don't get me started on EA and Rio. I could write a book on my time in Rio. I will limit myself to ten words:

Wealth
Poverty
Extreme
Beauty
Ugliness
Sex
Drugs
Men
Women
Caraca!

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

I think finding a match is where it's at. I am not registered for a fair this time around, and I've already had two interviews in two weeks at top international schools, and next week I have my third. Why would I want to go to a fair and interact with the masses?

Re: Paris

In all seriousness, why would some of you never consider Paris schools? Is it the quality of the schools or the quality of life in Paris for the pittance that you are being paid? From what I can tell, two schools in town are actually respectable and pay decently. You are not going to get rich working there, but it could be a good quality of life - unless I am missing something...?

Re: Readers/Writers Workshop in Latin America

EARJ did, but for all it's natural beauty, I rather be working in my hometown of East St. Louis again than Rio again. I never got held up at gunpoint in East St. Louis or had the army launch a military operation from our school campus in East St. Louis. East St. Louis like Vienna compared to Rio.

Hungary or School Limiting Expat Contracts?

Just got word that at least one well known (and arguably most reputable) international school in Hungary is now going to advertise positions as having initial two-year contracts with only a one-year max renewal after that. Is this a school-specific change or something that is being mandated from the Hungarian government? It reminds me of what they do in other locales, but this term is even shorter!

Sad but true.

Re: 2019-20 jobs

I have sent out five applications. No bites yet. Either because it's too early or because I'm black.

Looking ahead, far ahead

Hey girls,

Back again. It seems like a blink of an eye ago I landed but boy am a ready to recruit this year and blow this joint. At this time, I would probably say yes to anywhere except for eastern DR Congo and only because of the Ebola outbreak there, not the militant militias. I am all signed up for London and I can't wait to throw myself at the feet of anyone who will take me for my position or lower. Boo, I would take cleaning lady at a school in Sarajevo at present. But, my questions is about even further in the future. I started an MA program for Educational Leadership this fall and plan on being finished it by the end of my next contract (if I stay only two years), but just barely. As in, if I last two years at the next place, I will be finishing the program up in Spring of 2021 at the same time as I finish year two at my next school, which is a few months after the climax of the next recruiting season I will be going into after this one (if all goes according to plan). Is there any chance of me getting a mid-level or higher admin job if I recruit that time around? Or should I wait until 2022 when I will have had the MA for 9 months+ at the height of that recruiting season? I am eager to get into admin - can you tell?
