Did anyone else get this today?

Why is he sending us this crap?

Dear Candidates,

Please see the attached link to a document with information about a new school start up in Saudi Arabia. This school is a fascinating new project in a new the Economic City, being established by King Abdullah, and will be managed by the GEMS Educational group, who are already operating many schools in the region. I had a chance to visit with Mark Johnston, the Principal leading this effort, while he was with us here in Bangkok at the Search Bangkok Spring Fair. I came away intrigued by this opportunity, and excited to assist Mark with his staffing. As you can see in the document linked to this message, they are looking for many teachers in a variety of subject areas, so this is a great opportunity to get in on this very interesting project at the ground level.

If you are interested in learning more about the project, or connecting with Mark, please reply to this e-mail, and let me know. I will be assisting with some pre-screening for Mark and helping him identify candidates for further consideration.

Sincerely,
Michael Williams

I went to Search London years ago and I'm American. It's a good fair with a heavy concentration of European school. But as with all things Search-related, you have to weigh your chances of getting a position against the appalling cost of attending.

"And it can be very difficult to tease apart any difficulties with your school from any difficulties with the country. If you're struggling every day at work, then returning every afternoon to a crap apartment that your awful school provided, you won't be in a frame of mind to notice all the wonders in the rest of the country."

Very, very well put.

"The point is that 2 months in a place is not long enough to make an informed opinion of what it's like to live there. "

It's not?? Then how long do you need? I knew I loved New York the moment I set foot there. I knew I loathed Santo Domingo pretty much immediately. And I knew I was so-so on London within a few days. My opinions of these places did not change in any significant way after moving to them. It's not the amount of time in a place that matters when it comes to creating an informed opinion, it's the number and depth of your experiences.

The issue here is not how long it takes to like or dislike a place----it's sounding off on a place you've never been to. But I'd even say this is not a hard and fast rule. Do I really need to go to Homs or Tegucigalpa or Lome to know I probably wouldn't like it?

I have tried the "estadounidense" moniker across Latin America and Europe but most non-Americans have no idea what you are saying when you use it. I think at this point in history, for better or for worse, "American" from "America" is pretty much the accepted nomenclature even if it strikes an uncomfortable reflex in some listeners.

If there's one alternative, it would be "norteamericano" which of course doesn't settle the US/Canada/Inuit issue but at least you've started off the conversation with a bit more geographic openness.

Back to the OP's query, I've always thought Americans' idea of what make an acceptable conversational volume was set a bit high...then I went to Italy.

I find most of his posts marginally helpful, but does he actually have a job? How can anyone be on ISR as much as he is and still work?

Utter waste of time. Schools at this fair, for the most part, have something drastically wrong with them to be hiring this late in the season.

Um, yes, I really mean that. The "aesthetical" qualities have much to be desired...as does the spelling of many professional educators.

Ethics are less of a concern for me than aesthetics. Heavens is this site visually bland.

Half the airfare? Two weeks summer break?

You are a teaching professional. Be smart. Accepting such shadiness brings the whole profession down.
