Re: Retirement Goal

We're starting our next phase with $1,500,000 and hope that the 4% rule holds true.

Re: How long is your commute?

25 minutes in the morning and 35 in the afternoon, am tired of the commute and just figured that I spend roughly 8 entire days/school year sitting in the bus.

Re: Should we pull out of China move?

In the end you have to do what is right for you, not the school because they would turn around and do it to you if it fit their agenda. Last summer Shanghai American School dropped a number of teachers who had contracts, including teachers with families. In the fall they then broke contract with all the teachers outside of China by reducing our compensation. Sure, would it suck for the school if you chose to accept the position in Qatar, but at the same time they wouldn't hesitate to drop you like a hot potato if it fit their narrative better.

Re: Should we pull out of China move?

I am one of the staff that got back in the fall, and I agree for the most part that (2019-20) staff are back, but that doesn't mean it was easy, happened in a timely fashion, or for the faint of heart. As for new (2020-21) teachers, we still have teachers sitting in the US and Europe unable to come to China and probably soon to be cut loose. Most of the teachers recruited for the next school year are coming from schools in China, simplifying their travels and the school's worries immensely.

Re: Should we pull out of China move?

Actually large schools in Shanghai seem to have very little influence in getting their teachers into China and even if they did have influence there are so many other variables in play that school influence would be negligible anyway. I say this from personal experience. I disagree with other posters and don't see anything wrong with questioning your decision, its not unreasonable in today's ever changing climate for one to sit back and ask themselves what's best for their family.

Re: Teaching in China

Its not necessarily how a particular school reacted to the events of the past year but how China is reacting right now. My school recruited almost entirely from within China for the 21-22 school year because of the difficulty bringing new teachers into China, we continue to have teachers hired last year sitting outside unable to get in. To compound the problem even if the teacher was able to obtain a visa and flight, their dependents are unable to join them for the foreseeable future.

Re: Should we pull out of China move?

Shanghai is a fabulous city and very safe Covid wise, I highly recommend it, however coming to Shanghai right now is not for the faint of heart. There are all sorts of obstacles involved in traveling here from getting visas, to booking flights, meeting the health requirements to fly, to dealing with the arrival quarantine and you need to decide whether its worth it and how supportive your school will be.

Re: Teaching Abroad and Home Ownership

Personally, I would recommend it. We bought a house 12 years ago and have never regretted it. We don't rent it out and its been available to us whenever we have needed it, this was particularly useful this past year when we spent 8 months living there while locked out of China. We have kids, now grown, who appreciated having their own space during the summers and then a space to retreat to while in university. One also lived there for a short time after university. It does come with costs however, you need to keep in mind that it costs money to insure, maintain and to look after when you aren't there.

I don't believe you are qualified to teach in China without certification, something I would check into with all your preferred destinations.

Kellysensai, they may say that but we have an academic coach with two kids and a dependent husband hired last year. If you are in demand they will change the rules to make it work, it happens all the time.

Re: China all benefits taxed from Jan 1 2022 update

In the past Shanghai American School has professed to hired the best fit possible, regardless of the number of dependents. I"m not sure that policy remains given the current situation but we do have multiple teachers with multiple dependents.
