That comes out to about US$29,500, which is a decent salary in Cairo. There are schools that pay more, but there are way more schools that pay less.

My partner and I earn slightly more than that (+ flights, accom. and medical). We go on vacation three times a year, live well in Cairo and send home US$30,000 a year between us (we send home one salary).

Even the beaches in Bali are nothing to shout (although it's a lovely place to visit). For the better beaches you need to get to the islands of the coast of Lombok (I forget their names - there are three of them).

Re: Par for the Course
What i dont get (getting up to my lectern here) is these schools that have bad reviews that are 10 evaluations long and all bad except for the one totally glowing evaluation that you know has to be from an admin at the school. These schools that are ALWAYS, year round advertising for teachers and are constantly hiring.
What i don't get is the amount of people who aren't prepared to stump up the $35 to join ISR to see said reviews. Seems a pittance to save yourself two years of agony.

Taxes are paid. The 90,000 is net. Gross salary is about 109,000 baht.

So, when people are specifying salaries in Thailand on here, they are quoting the gross, not the net?

Just to clarify, rent allowance is included in the 90,000 baht, not in addition to.

We live a fairly quiet life, although that is partly due to our current location. We're not really five star hotel dwellers and are quite happy with Thai restaurants and spending vacations in medium level hotels in places like Ko Samet and Ko Chang.

Thanks guys.

Yes, education for our child is free at the school. Also, 90,000 baht is net salary.

The deal we have at the moment in our current school is a bit better (cost of living being roughly the same as Thailand), but the country isn't nearly as appealing as Thailand!

Bangkok on 90,000 Baht with Two Dependents

I have a possible offer from a school in Bangkok. The salary is 90,000 baht including housing plus medical and flights every two years. I currently have two dependents.

I only have one year full time teaching experience, which happens to be at an international school, so a lot of the better schools are not exactly leaping out of their chairs when they look at my resume.

We'll only have to survive on one salary for a year, as my partner will be able to work full time the second year we are there (we are a teaching couple), so we'll be up to 180,000 baht a month then.

Given that we have limited experience, does this sound okay?

The school checks out and the current teachers seems to like it.

From what I understand $44,000 is a decent salary, although there is no housing allowance. It provides for a decent life style and substantial savings ($20,000 + a year).

Concerning the tax, many Canadian teachers who teach at ESL schools in Asia, just tell the Revenue Canada they went travelling (i.e. did not earn an income).

It is true that most schools want the two years post cert. experience, but they definitely look at ESL experience. A few Canadian school (including Maple Leaf) like to hire new graduates and reitred teachers.

Dalian won the award for most liveable city in China a couple of years ago.

My wife and I will be starting our first international post in September. Our daughter will start kindergarten at the school. Schooling is free, but we have to pay for flights.

It seems the better the school, the better the package. Many good schools will provide schooling and flights. I think if a school doesn't offer tuition, then they're not really interested in families.

Do your practicum again. I had three great friends fail their practicums the year I did my B.Ed.. All repeated it the following year and passed.

I had four years ESL experience before starting my practicum and I actually felt the teacher in the classroom was not as good a teacher as me. I'm not boasting, he was just not very good. He was old, out of ideas, mean and ready for retirement. Do the practicum again.

Aussiechick, in Canada (and maybe elsewhere) a B.Ed. can be a four (five?) year degree, or it can be a one year (four semester) extension to another bachelors degree. For example, I have a four year BA Hons in Geography plus a one year B.Ed.. Most provinces require five years of university beofre you can teach. It is perfectly acceptable to Canadian and international schools around the world.

Shipping to Cairo?

So it seems we have landed jobs in Cairo for next year. We are thinking that we would like to ship about 6 cubic metres of personal effects. We've lived in other countries and always sold everything when we've left. We don't want to do that any more, particularly as we now have a daughter and we want her to feel comfortable and settled.

We are shipping from Vancouver. I'm thinking it's more important to find a reliable shipping company on the Egypt end and then work backwards to contact there Canadian contact.
