But will the fairs still be open, thats the question.

Atteneded UNI twice with three kids and came away both times with jobs. It is a well supported, well run fair with lots going for it.

They should have a huge impact, on both your spending and saving habits. My kids are older now and I sometimes look back and am amazed at how much they cost and where I would be financially without them, not that I would change anything.

Re: Package Negotiations

There won't be any kind of negotiation on your part, however, depending on the position your spouse took there might be some there. Negotiating points might revolve around housing, yearly transportation, and other minor benefits.

Re: "PERKS"

As the rmb continues to devalue and our school is unable to meet the devaluation with salary increases I would be thrilled if they looked outside the box and offered perks like a free lunch.

Re: Election Results

I have never seen our school more depressed. Our monthly staff meeting was actually called off because of the results.

Re: When is it time to hang up your IT satchel?

Excellent question and excellent response from NewsAdvisor. I think you hang up your satchel when you know which one you're going to pick up next.

Re: Stats, Pros & Cons (Oh My!)

Would discouraging prospects of employment overseas alter your retirement plans? If so, then your cons should be given more weight. However, if you are going to retire anyway and have the energy and passion to move overseas then what cost is there to try? Sure, if you go with Search or ISS there will be a registration cost, but there are plenty of other options out there that cost less. You just need to be prepared to go anywhere and be open to a wide variety of schools.

If you are retiring anyway then I don't see a downside to trying. What's the worst that can happen, you could end up retired in the states pursuing other passions.

Re: Looking at schools through the eyes of a parent

I think you would be doing a disservice to your kids if they didn't attend the school. One of the primary reasons we went overseas was to expose our children to other cultures and where do kids do most of that, in school. I also think you are putting the cart before the horse, in thinking you need to keep your advanced child out of school. Who is to say what the school does or doesn't offer and lets face it in middle school academics are not the only important factor, socializing and learning to work with a wide variety of people are equally important skills that adolescents continue/begin to learn in middle school. And finally, as a teacher who has taught in both Canada and the United States I don't believe you will find a tremendous difference between the two systems, especially overseas.

I'm not sure we went into buying a home with that in mind and we were fortunate that is what happened. We have friends in California that didn't share that experience and ended up paying out of state.

Re: Best Summer Plans?

Our kids were a little older when we went overseas to stay and we thought it was important for them to have a place to call home, so we bought. They were able to find summer jobs, get a drivers license and eventually have some place to call home when they went away to university. It isn't a perfect solution and occasionally it drives us crazy but even today we enjoy coming home and doing the things we love to do even when our kids aren't here.

Re: Loans

If you're going to borrow money with no intention of repaying your loan why not save yourself the paperwork hassle and simply rob a bank or a 7-11?

Re: Banking

You probably won't have a choice of which in-country bank to use, generally the bank your school uses is the bank that you will use. In China we are lucky to have access to UnionPay which is accepted all over SE Asia, but for those purchases that aren't possible with UnionPay we bank with our small town credit union and use their VISA. The fact we can transfer money easily and write electronic cheques on our account is great. I would also suggest giving someone at home signing rights to your account. If anything unexpected comes up then they have much easier access and the bank will answer their questions.

Re: Career ITs and retirement

From someone who didn't, start saving early no matter where your career path takes you. Develop a plan and stick to it.
