Are you kidding?! That's fine money! Our single teachers get paid less than that and they don't complain!
Singapore is expensive if you choose it to be! You can get lunch for $4, dinner for $8 if you choose to do so.
You can get a nice 2 bedroom apartment for that rental allowance in some areas.

Re: Need extra health insurance
Yes, check out BUPA's international plans. I use them to cover me while traveling. About 129$ USD a year.

Re: ISF Academy, Hong Kong
Worked there.
Friends still there. I don't know who DCgirl is talking about! Maybe one of the Chinese teachers who will stay there forever. Woohoo they picked us up in the morning, big deal! I would say 90% of students are Hong Kong natives.
No teacher satisfaction from what I hear and there was zero satisfaction when I worked there. It was horrendous. Any teacher who doesn't have family ties to Hong Kong (a lot do) get the hell out of there.
It's a Chinese run school with lots of things that distract and get in the way of day to day teaching. Glad to be in a proper IB school now.

Maybe I'm living in the twilight zone or maybe I've lived and worked internationally for 10 years now but... I've never argued with Psyguy. I've always agreed with his opinions!
Sure, teachers need sugar coated answers now and again, an arm around the shoulder and to be told everything is alright but how about a reality check now and again!
In my opinion, from teaching internationally for 10 years, Psyguy is speaking from experience.

You need to pay attention to everything Psyguy is saying. I have friends who have 2 kids who find it extremely hard to find jobs in the "circuit". And they're qualified! Tax in Germany is 47% (I worked there), I don't know what it is in other WE countries but I'm sure it's similar.
The likelihood of you getting hired in WE is 0-5%. That's optimistic.
As Psyguy said "Look into DoDDS, QSI, Aramco, they dont care about housing, but your (sic) not going to get into WE (Italy)."

So cool to read people that have started their IS career in their 50s! Right on! I started 10 years ago, can't believe I'm 34 now.
Singapore "dimnds" is like other countries the more last minute you are the less the chance of getting a job! It's July already! You're gonna have to look for next school year, activate your account on Search and get looking.

As stated, Renaissance is NOT bilingual.
Bilingual schools are strange places to work. I worked in one of the ones mentioned. You can't communicate with more than half of your colleagues as they are mainland Chinese (unless you speak Manadarin). Staff meetings/PD sessions take twice as long with translations.
They Chinese way of governing a school is frustrating to someone coming from an international school circuit. The curriculum can be a complete mess.
I'm back in an IS now, and I will NEVER work in a bilingual school again. They look good on paper and have the longest waiting lists of students but they're a pain to work in. And I saw too many bright students fall by the wayside as they just couldn't grasp a second language and struggled overall as a result.
