Can someone explain the Spanish tax scheme to me please.

Say I make 30k. How much would take home be? I have found conflicting info online regarding income tax and social security. And I have to declare foreign assets, that worries me.

Re: Best Recruitment Sites

I never expected to sit back and get contacted without reaching out to schools first. LIke psy said it was the best for me at the time, even if not appropriate.

Re: IB certificate or workshop?

I'm not a recruiter but I would think having strong academic background in your field would be crucial. I have have taken 3 cat1s in the last year and must say they are pretty useless except for the acknowledgement of completion. I would venture I could be successful on an online one not in my field. These were online ones and the amount of inane and useless posts you have to read can be frustrating. At best they force you to read the guide. I mentioned this to our IB coordinator and he said that's normal and that's why he is pushing for us to get face to face ones from now on. And the networking aspect is a bonus too.

So I would just recommend a face to face if possible...but I think they are almost double the cost.

You could also show interest by going to gatherings called job-alikes (for free) where IB teachers and coordinators get together.

Re: Best Recruitment Sites

I was just frustrated with them, because in hindsight there was little chance I was going to get hired by a decent school. So that's a plus if ISS doesn't just take anyone. The bottom rung schools were the same ones on TIE and I was surprised SEARCH represents some really crappy schools. Then again when you are looking for a job you want to look at all options. I didn't mind doing the legwork, so I did made a list of schools on SEARCH that I would work for and the number is around 300. I will apply to them directly next time around. I realize I will miss out on any new ones with SEARCH.

Re: Best Recruitment Sites

I can see how ISS may be better than Search. I base this on my experience with Search. First off, I sought out advice considering my situation and if it was worthwhile to join search. I was assured it was, yet it became clear the only bites I was getting were from terrible schools which should not be represented by anyone. I was also frustrated one would go through the whole process of filling out forms, references etc. and then schools would ask you to do it all over again on their website. I also noticed a lot of the schools on Search are also starting to use TIE.

So now I am planning ahead and contacted Search, asking what I needed to do to reactivate my account. Apparently I have to do everything over from scratch. I figure I will just contact schools directly in addition to using TES and TIE. Perhaps even try ISS, because I felt Search just told me what I wanted to hear so that I would sign up. I should be a lot more marketable this time around, but I would rather not employ Search.

Teaching in New Zealand

I was just wondering if anyone has taught there and what it is like. There seems to be a lot of jobs in New Zealand and I was wondering why. There doesn't seem to be any reviews of schools tho, perhaps not many international schools?

Re: ISS or Search

For me personally Search was useless. Perhaps it was my personal situation at play somewhat. For me the schools on Tie were essentially the same as on search. My search advisor was useless and clearly just out to feather his nest. In the end I found an awesome job posted on a free board.

Re: Health Insurance Providers

That's a good of looking at it. If you are somewhere with lower costs it would make sense.

Re: Health Insurance Providers

A lot of tourist policies are not applicable to people who are not still eligible for health care back home. I am not. Actually I did have a local policy...and which may be best again. I did however have to purchase insurance whenever I traveled and went back home...which adds up. I maybe spent $500 or more on my trips for a family of three.

Ok, Blue Cross, I will check them out.

-Not true. A tourist policy isn't even a valid policy for an expat.

-Perhaps higher than a useless tourist policy, but I'm not going to skimp on health care for my family. Had direct billing with my last provider.

-You could add US, Canada and regions with non-existent healthcare because it will cost you to get where you can get served.

-Well it would be quite the issue if you didn't have that in a poorly serviced region, wouldn't it.

So like I said I would just like people to post what providers they have used. Perhaps few will post because most are covered by their school. A good provider would do direct billing and provide in and out-patient care but I can investigate any and decide what is best for me.

Health Insurance Providers

The school I'm headed to doesn't offer very good coverage so I was wondering if people could list their providers. Thanks.

Re: feeling like giving up

I still see 900 jobs on tie although I don't know how deligent schools are at deleting their filled vacancies. On Search a lot of positions over a month old. Seems like some schools take a while to fill their positions. Anyways I knew I couldn't compete during the first round but hoping to land something by the end of the school year. I had two schools contacting me in March last year out of the blue.

No job here. Just the realization I would rather move on and at some point you have to take the leap of faith. Its seems the only way to "escape".

How would you apply through Search? All I see are email links.
