Re: Response

A friend just did the Buckingham MA and said it was pretty easy. Sounds like a good option if you just want a MA Edu.

Nice!
The same just happened at my school. A teacher asked for PT because she just had a kid and did not want FT during the first year, and the school was keen to keep her so said yes.

Re: Reply

I have taught at British, American and full-IB schools and just like @Philzim I think the IB curriculum is the best of the three. I think it delivers the most well-rounded students and that they are better prepared to succeed at university. A lot of teachers I know with kids have made sure they got a job at an IB school so their kids can do IB.
I know there are good IB schools in nice countries that will not dismiss candidates without IB-experience but yes, having experience will help. I switched to an IB-school when I noticed all of the schools I hoped to end up at one day all had IB DP so I thought it smart to have that experience on my CV.

Re: Is your school too quick or too slow to not renew (or fire) teachers?

Going by friends at top tier Asian schools it seems they are good at hiring the right teachers and saying goodbye to the hires that fail or stop to perform. It helps if you get hundreds of applications of course.
There are exceptions though.
A friend at NIST Bangkok said his colleague was blindsided though and asked to look for another job. I appreciate my school at least gives you ample warning so you can step up your game.
Friend at Taipei American said they had some strange unorthodox hires in the past that worked out very well and they rarely have to let go of staff but only because everyone performs well. Taipei European has three or so reviews with mentions of a specific bad HOD -also saw him mentioned on Reddit as being toxic- so they seem very hesitant to let bad teachers/HODs go.
At IS Manila you never feel like your job is safe from what I've heard.

How come I can't edit my previous post?
In the past I was able to edit a post.

Re: Is your school too quick or too slow to not renew (or fire) teachers?

My previous school was in WE and there were definitely some teachers that should be let go but will probably be there till they retirement. I read a lot about schools in WE not being great because it has a lot of dead wood preventing it from improving.

My current school does sometimes let teachers go who don't fit or underperform and then fail to improve after receiving two talks about this. I think it's healthy that your job isn't guaranteed and receiving two warnings you receive before you are told you won't be getting a new contract seems fair.

Re: SA Bangkok Fair - Still worth it?

I know lots of teachers who got hired at that fair, so I would say yes, still worth it. But depends on the size of the overlap between schools that are attending and schools you want to work at.

Thanks. I have also sent it to some teacher friends from past schools.

I am currently in Hong Kong. The Christian school you mention does have some atheists on staff but they just don't go around sharing their atheist persuasion with their co-workers.
ESF pays well. They are lower tier 1 or upper tier 2 schools and the pay is in the ballpark of other upper tier 2 schools here.
Hong Kong is still a good place. You'll like it here and if you land a job at ESF you will save well. Your lifestyle and your location will determine how much exactly and the difference in savings on the same salary can be be huge in Hong Kong. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I don't check this forum very often anymore but I'll try to check again soon.

Well I do not like them but I cannot speak for everyone. I do not know many recruiters that really enjoy them but no doubt some will tho. Makes sense they go and have a drink after a whole day of recruiting but most recruiters do not do take advantage of being in Bangkok imo. After a full day of interviewing I don't have much energy either so I understand.

Re: Reply

Yes they can, they all get lots of applications and speaking from experience: 4+ years of IB and 10+ years overall on your CV is not that uncommon.
Yes fit is very important, that was my point: even if two CVs are the same the level of fit will likely differ.
You can think the tier 1 is smaller than the list but I do not think it's off by much. No harm in disagreeing there.
Seems you have different opinions on lots of things and that is fine. Have a good week.

Re: Search Job Fair Demise

As a recruiter I hate the online fairs because of the unreliable technology and when video calling the conversations always feel even more awkward but I have also always hated the in-person fairs because I don't like taking so much time out of my schedule and stay at a hotel room. There is def a benefit of someone actually sitting across from you so you do get a better sense of what they are really like but I wish my school would be in Bangkok so I could just have breakfast at home, do the interviews and go home straight after.
I do think the in-person fairs with the same caliber schools as before will return though.

First tier anywhere can prob demand 4 years IB and 10 years overall seeing how many applicants they get but yes in Japan they could be likely ask for a lot more although I doubt that adds much. Speaking for my school I don't care if it is 4 or 6 or 8 years IB experience as the applicant just needs to meet the experience requirement along with some other ones so we can look at fit which is where people can really set themselves apart. Two applicants with the same CV can still be wildly different teachers.

Half of that 10% are schools I would not call tier 1 but most others still do so they should be on the list but they will not be on my personal list.
I would not call it bloat as I see more teachers at the first tier underestimating how favorably their school compares to others than the other way around.
I see too many teachers base their classification of a school they do not personally know on a single opinion they have heard from colleagues or a stranger at a workshop etc and then repeat it to other teachers who in turn spread it. I think that's more likely where the 5% comes from but we are all just speculating anyway and part of it might be bloat as well. Still even at 90% it is the most accurate lists I have seen so kudos to Helotrope.

Longer than a month in my experience, from AP to DP but can only speak for what I have seen.
Though heard DP to AP takes about a month for most teachers as it is more straight-forward.
Anyway all teachers eventually get there in the end.
