I agree with PsyGuy. If you try for Pre-school you are dead in the water.

However, most international schools that offer Pre-K or KG 1 and 2 will allow parents to go watch the little ones' pageants, assemblies, presentations, etc in which their child is involved. After school, it is not uncommon to have your kids come chill out in your classroom with you. You drive to school every morning with your kids and walk them to class, drop them off, and then, if you choose, walk over and pick them up.

Because you teach MS or HS kids, you can find nice kids who are good with little ones to look after you kids on campus after school if you have duties.

Been there done that - but I taught.

Good luck!

Again - if you don't try, you will never know. It costs you nothing to do it, but the payoff is fantastic if it works.

That is, if you have the ability to teach math to grade 12 including pre-calc, calc, and stats...

OrangeSoda,

why are you only targeting British Schools? By doing so, you eliminate the majority of international schools in the world.

Your skills carry over to other systems - it is the experience that many schools value.

I have taught in the British system, the American system, the Canadian system, and IB - while there are differences, a good teacher can teach in any of them. There will be mental adjustments - for example, you are used to the British band system and SOWs, while in the American/Canadian system you will have F to A+ grades on a percentage basis and have lesson and unit plans. The IB has similarities to the British national system.

If you have not signed up for TIEonline (which you can do almost instantaneously), do so. Post your resume/CV and start researching jobs at ALL the international schools posting vacancies.

Good luck!

PS While a lot of recruiting takes place at the fairs, don't worry that there are no jobs out there - jobs will continue to come along until the school year starts...Also, apply to those schools I mentioned above!

Yantantether - nope. It was still there as of January Bangkok fair. Nice to know this when you have a trailing spouse (or a spouse who is not yet certified, so needs to do something until completing certification).

Calipro, while you only need 3 academic and 1 parent reference, I try to have more from different positions/places so that schools can see a consistent pattern. The nice thing is you can add references after you are inactive, for any of the categories.

Hope this helps!

Andyleblanc

We use(d) both Search and Tie in our job hunt this year. Search has a great database, gives more information of interest to a teacher than TIE does - student body breakdown by level, salary range, opportunities for trailing spouse, and (I think in many cases) a better description of the job being advertised than TIE does.

Quite a few Search schools also post on TIE - other Search schools make it a point to never post on TIE. A lot of second tier and lower schools only post on TIE - some schools only post on TIE when they get later in the recruiting season and the job needs to be filled.

Next time I go recruiting will I use Search and TIE in conjunction again? Yes - because that way I will cover almost all the available jobs in my area.

Just my two cents - others opinion might vary...

OrangeSoda - I would also say at this stage, forget the cover letters - focus on a one page 'advert' that sells YOU and another one which sells your spouse. Use those as an initial contact, or as the first page of a PDF package (I love combine files in Acrobat Pro) which then has your CV, teaching certificate and a couple of good reference letters.

I usually say in my email accompanying this that I did not do a cover letter because they tend to look all the same and say the same wonderful things - but that one page advert should give them a very good snapshot of who you are, what your skills are, what your experience is, what other benefits you bring to the table (coaching, sponsoring clubs, volunteering, service learning with students, etc).

Good luck!

OrangeSoda - American School of Douala (Cameroon) recently posted a K-12 computer position and they have other positions open.

Cairo American College recently posted a high school ITC position and they teach computer science I believe (but don't quote me on that).

Contact Dubai American Academy - their MS IT facilitator might be leaving, so that might be coming open.

Are you with Search? Not necessarily to go to the fairs, but you get access to their pretty comprehensive data base...

As for humanities, that also encompasses English as well -

Most teachers I know have a classroom library from school resources. I don't know of any teacher who brought (or was expected to) bring their classroom library.

When I left my home country to teach overseas, I ended up donating my classroom library (fairly sizable) to the school library - and I also gave away certain books to students who I thought would really appreciate them.

The big question - do you really want to use your baggage/moving allowance to bring books to (if you have made the right choice) a school with a vibrant school library and lots of resources for students and teachers?

Emily, no matter where you go, India is an assault on all your senses - both good and bad. It really is an amazing country, but it has both its good and bad. As a westerner, you are quite safe in India. You would not be standing on a street and accept a ride on a bus from people you didn't know, I hope, which is what happened in Delhi.

The Embassy School staff live in a nice part of Delhi, but Delhi does get polluted, particularly in the winter months. That said, it does not get as bad as places in China.

THAT said, there are some schools in China in very nice locations where the pollution is not great - think Hong Kong, Macau, Xiamin (on the coast), and more - but you have to do your homework on which ones.

If you had a choice, I would recommend your top school be the Embassy School - I have friends teaching there and friends who have taught there - and it is an amazing school. Asthma is also something that can be managed.

If your husband has bad asthma, though, you might want to go for more of a SE Asia feel rather than India...

Good luck!

No. It is known that most Italian schools do not pay well, do not have great benefits, and do not provide a lot of help with other things. However, you would be living in Italy...
