I think you need to save 30,000 just to have a chance at a decent retirement.
If you can't save that you need to find a better paying school or just go out and teach for a few years and head back home.
We have been doing this 20+ years and have saved around 700,000$. That might not even be enough according to many financial advisers.

Re: American Embassy School India any recent info?
The school is going through some tough times...
Tuition is going up 30%. They may have to pay 30 years of back taxes. Visas for teachers are in limbo. All because of the arrest and strip search of the Diplomat in NYC. Hopefully these problems will die down over the next year or so.

I hope you don't have kids....
I wouldn't send mine to any of their schools.

Re: Seeking update on Qatar Academy/Doha
Sands is staying, big bucks will do that.
The school is really going all Qatari. Classes by gender. Lots of Islam stuff.
It is not a good scene, I would avoid at all costs.

Re: ASIJ salary reduction?
Yep, I have heard there are 3 scales. Plus, teachers now pay part of their kids tuition. Not the gold mine of the past.

Rumor is he is out. Getting his paper work from the police. Getting his passport from Qatar Academy. Spending the night at the Nepal Embassy and getting out tomorrow morning.
Wouldn't it be great if the international community rallied around this guy, donated to his school in Nepal and made something good from this mess!
On a side note:
Eric Sands is the director of QA, I am NOT impressed!!
We still love our jobs here at The American School of Doha!

This is from his blog......
This is SO wrong on so many levels!
About Me
March 4th, 2013
I was not supposed to have even made it to (primary) school. But I did. Following that, I wasn’t meant to have completed high school. But I did. Going on to an international school in Italy and following that up with tertiary education in the US and Australia was not in the cards! But they happened, against all odds. In other words, I beat the odds!

Jailed Teacher in Qatar!
A Nepalese teacher fired from a prestigious secondary school in Qatar for remarks he made to students last month appeared in a lower Doha court today on charges of insulting Islam.
Dorje Gurung, who taught chemistry at Qatar Academy, was seen by Doha News this morning leaving the court in handcuffs. If convicted, Article 256 of the Penal Code stipulates that he could face up to seven years in jail.
Colleagues, friends and students interviewed by Doha News said Gurung, whose two-year teaching contract was set to expire in July, had been facing problems at QA with students who did not respect his authority, in part due to his nationality.
Two of Gurung’s friends at the courthouse shared with Doha News notes of the teacher’s account of what happened. Here is a summary:
Fateful week
On Monday, April 22, Gurung said he had a sit-down chat with three 12-year-old boys who were making fun of him. Among other things, the seventh graders poked fun at his appearance, calling him “Jackie Chan,â€
