Reference letters

My husband is going for a counseling job and is pulling together his references, photos, etc (almost done). I read some of his reference letters, and they are very clinically oriented (his background is predominately clinical save his most recent job at a school). The letters rave about his supervisory skills, programming for mental health, etc as well as his passion for working with children and families. Will those letters suffice? He is hesitant to ask the current school supervisor for a letter as he does not want them to know he might be leaving.

Re: Looking at schools through the eyes of a parent

Thanks to those of you who wrote about the British vs. American style of school. That would open up a lot more schools for us. Because we are an multicultural, international family we want our kids to have the experience of living overseas. The children are getting on board with that idea as well (they were very nervous at the thought originally). The homeschool idea came from the issue that my husband and I are in the same field and that may work against us. If the school didn't have to enroll both kids my thought was they would be more open to hiring just one of the spouses. I didn't think it would come across as an insult to the school for us to say "no thanks" to their educational system.
Anyway, thank you so much for the info!

Looking at schools through the eyes of a parent

Looking for thoughts from parents teaching overseas.
Because we have 2 middle school children, I had written off British international schools as I understood it to be a bad idea to put an American educated child into an English school system (is this true for Canadian system as well?). One individual advised my husband to apply for positions at a variety of schools, and have me homeschool the children. It would serve 3 purposes: A) the school would not have to provide 2 seats to our kids (and keep their tuition from full pay families) B) The children could continue an American style program, and C) One of our kids is many years advanced grade-wise, and we have heard that overseas schools don't always recognize grade acceleration.

I imagine that my husband needs to indicate the fact that our kids won't need to attend the school in the cover letter? Where else in a job package would this information go? I plan to work part time as well (my work can be done anywhere, even a school). Should he mention this fact also?
Thanks.

Re: Contacting schools directly - when?

No, I know it's too late for this Fall. We are looking at the next year ('17/'18). So, you recommend contacting them early Fall? I have noted posts which stated individuals started contacting schools in summer, Oct, or even as late as November.

As far as who to contact, I read that If you are submitting a cold application, consult the ISs HR/Employment website which may list an email for submissions. I also read that some send an additional email to the principal. Good idea?

Contacting schools directly - when?

For those of you who chose to contact schools directly, when did you start sending out your emails? Some articles suggest late Fall. Isn't that too late?
I remember a few posts giving suggestions on who to send the information but can't find the posts. What has worked for you?
Thanks!

Fall 2016-start looking for counselor positions

We have postponed looking for jobs until this Fall 2016. My husband's current job has changed into something that will, hopefully, look very positive on his resume so we wish to sit tight for this go-round. I read that counseling positions come up earlier than others. What should be our target date to be ready with our resumes/websites, etc this Fall?

IGB International School in KL Malaysia

Does anyone have any information about IGB International School in KL Malaysia? I have Googled and looked around here and found very little. Thanks!

Search application/creditation/MSW or LPC

Counselors question pertaining to Search: If you have a MSW or LPC did you post it under "Teaching Credential" or post it under "Professional Credentials"? This application is taking up too much time! I need to finish it now!

2 School counselors in the family

As mentioned on another post, my husband and I are both licensed mental health therapists. He has extensive experience as a therapist and in administration in psych. hospitals and large agencies; I have worked for just 2 years. Noting that, it has been advised that he go for the school position, and I go for an expat agency job (currently I am a child therapist in an agency specializing in kids whose parents are immigrants). While the odds are against us both finding school counseling positions, I thought I would still put my hat in the ring for a school job and see what happens. Usually it is recommended that the cover letter and summary contain a "couple's paragraph". I wonder if we still do that considering we are both going for similar jobs (I have more experience with young kids - he with adolescents. We both work with schools for our clients.). We are filling out the Search and Assoc. application and probably will fill out one for TIES. Do we link ourselves or not?
Thanks!

Question for counselors/admin

Happy Thanksgiving! Before I bake a pie, I have a question:
My husband and I are trying to fill out the Search application for counselor positions. The site, of course, is geared towards teaching and admin positions so my question is, how did those of you who are counselors answer some of the questions?
1)Positions held - my husband has been a counselor but is currently in administration in mental health. So he can put years as a counselor -should he check the closest admin position to what he holds now under the admin tab and put years held for that?
2) As I said, he is now in administration. Would that mean anything to Search? He actually created the school in his facility (created curriculum and hired teachers).
3) Do the Search people understand mental health licensing or would he need to clarify what some of his licenses mean?
Thanks!

Re: Clinical therapist switch to behavioral school counselor

Thanks, Nomad. We have spoken to our friends and other mental health professionals in Beijing and Shanghai, and their recommendation was a school job for me, and a clinician job for my husband - as you mentioned. I just wasn't sure if my therapist background was transferable to a school so I thank you for your nod of encouragement. My husband's background would make him an excellent middle school counselor (adolescent work is one of his specialties), but I think it would be incredibly hard for us to find 2 counselor positions in the same city.
