Re: Does an Ivy League Master's hold any weight as an IT?

Thanks for the response, fine dude. I already have significant international experience teaching math and CS at the AP and community college level (I already have a M.S. in Math) and have no plans of ever going into leadership. This is purely to satisfy my own intellectual interests and I'm lucky enough to have the ability to take a couple of years off to do it. My only hesitation is, like you said, the fact that there are other non-Ivy programs that are ranked more highly. CMU might be a long shot for me, but I can easily get into Georgia Tech or UT Austin. However, if the name recognition of an Ivy may prove itself to be worthwhile when looking at future IT positions, I'd like to take that into consideration.

Does an Ivy League Master's hold any weight as an IT?

I'm looking to go back to school for a variety of reasons and I am considering programs (non-education but in my subject area of CS) at 2 of the Ivies and a few more highly ranked state schools. My question is this - Would having, say Cornell or UPenn, be considered a benefit in the international school scene compared to state schools such as UT-Austin or UIUC?

Not with a Ph.D and those subjects. That said, my brain sort of glossed over the "only Taiwan" part. In that case, funteacher is right - you're limiting yourself to an extremely small pool with only one truly good international school on the island. If you expanded your search to China, you'd have much better odds.

Re: How competitive would I be?

I would say incredibly competitive, especially if you're actually good at teaching chemistry and calc. Those are hard subjects to find qualified teachers for.

Re: List of closed schools

My school in Karachi is doing the same as Mike's. Moved to distance learning a month ago and teachers were allowed to go back home for the rest of the school year/summer break. It has been working relatively well so far.

Wow. I suspect we're about to see a LOT of schools closing in the next year.

Re: Can I force Majeure?

Force Majeure ultimately means that your contract is essentially null and void and can be declared by the school due to unforeseen circumstances (like COVID-19). You can choose to stay or leave and the school can choose to keep you or let you go. As for the terms, it depends on your contract. Force Majeure at my school is 3 months of severance pay, a plane ticket home, and your shipment. I have a feeling there are a lot of schools out there with less desirable terms.

You yourself cannot force Force Majeure.

Re: Schools refusing to close due in COVID-2019 pandemic

Money. My school is paying all of our teachers their full salary and we are doing online learning from home, but a lot of schools don't have the budget for it.

Used to be the former, but I suspect it has transitioned to the latter in recent years. I know several people who were hired at or right above 60. I think if you were over 65 a first visa might be a problem, but subsequent ones don't seem to be. I can't find an official policy though, so that's not fact - just based on my experience.

Re: In 50s ready to relocate: comparing pension options

If you go into admin just for the money, you're going to have a bad time. Buy Andrew Hallam's book this week and start thinking about how you can invest your income. I think you're suffering from a "grass is greener" mentality when in fact it might be easiest for you to stay where you are (and perhaps consider teaching French).

Moreover, I think you should run the numbers on European pensions as an IT. It's not as easy as you might think, especially since you will need to account for paying local taxes after year 2 or 3. I'm 35 and on the upper end of what is realistic for that route.

Pakistan isn't on the list, but as far as I know, there is no age limit for visas there. I worked with people in their mid-70s.

Re: Current 2019 list of countries with best savings potenti

Both of the good international schools in Pakistan (Islamabad and Karachi) will allow you to save 80% of your salary if you are frugal. The cost of living is extremely inexpensive and housing/taxes are covered by the schools.

Re: Schools that pay for flights up front?

My school booked us a flight for our preferred dates and airline. No money changed hands. It would definitely be a red flag for me if a school wanted me to shell out $2000+ of my own money before even arriving.

Re: Has anyone suspected that a boss or colleague lied about

I apologize for interrupting this lovely conversation, but I just want to point out that PsyGuy is 99% of why I no longer frequent this forum. It's tiring to see the same long-winded opinions spouted as fact time and time again. Hopefully everyone else on here does their due diligence and fact checks everything he says before making some sort of life changing decision.

Re: Getting a real job at a real school without experience

We have an Econ/Math cross at our school as well. The two subjects are just as complementary as physics/math, in my opinion.
