Recruitment Services/Job-sites for Australia and New Zealand

I havn´t found a single Australian or New Zealand school listed on ISS or COIS, despite there being many IB-schools in those countries. Is it simply cheaper for them to recruit nationally? Any suggestions on good services/job-sites for someone looking to teach at high school in these countries?

Lists of International Schools

Where can I find lists of international high schools in various countries? IB has a good one on their website, but I havn´t been able to find anything similar for AP, GCSE, A-levels, or national curricula. I´m mostly interested in a number of European countries, but also a few others. Any suggestions?

Re: Separating English IBDP from Spanish and French

I acctually found the answer by accident. There is a button called "advanced find" hidden in the upper right corner, far away from the normal search function, that I didn´t notice. It allows you to filter for language of instruction.

Separating English IBDP from Spanish and French

I´m trying to compile a list of schools I would like to work at. I´ve found several lists of schools in my area of interest (IBDP) on COIS, ISS, IB, etc. However, they never seem to separate between the diploma programs offered in English and the ones offered in French or Spanish. Going through the webpages for all the IB-schools in South America to figure this out would be quite time consuming. Do you know of any useful lists out there?

Is it easy getting a foreign teaching certificate?

Does anyone know of any country where I can apply for a teaching certificate in economics as a foreigner, without too much hassle/expenses?

I´m a certified Swedish teacher with a master of education and four years of work experience. I have 67.5 ECTS-credits in economics, and would like to teach the subject at an international high school. One of my problems is that I can´t get certified to teach that particular subject, as it is not offered in my home country. In the future I may or may not get a few more credits in the subject (possibly up to 90 ECTS-credits in total), but I don´t have any teaching experience in it yet. It seems like it would be a big advantage being certified, as ISS and some similar services uses certification as a search criteria, and I have heard that in some countries you need to be certified in the subject you are employed to teach to be able to get a visa. Getting a foreign certificate would allow me to get around this. It would preferably be a certificate that doesn´t expire.

Re: The value of getting an additional degree?

Yeah, getting the subject into my certification is not an issue, but since it´s a certificate from Scandinavia, recruiters will know very little about what weight that carries. In fact, because I´ve taken a large number of subjects, it may seem like they are handing out certificates left and right.

I´m certainly listing the courses on my CV. If the recruiter gets that far in his reading I don´t have a problem any more. The problem is that ISS, SEARCH, COIS, etc are mostly interested in registering your degrees. For example, I have done three full semesters of History (90 ECTS, with progression, long essays, etc). This would be enough to include in a degree, and enough to teach the subject in most schools, but on its own it seems to often be overlooked. The fact that many of my courses within the subjects are taken at different universities is not making a quick overview any easier. I have also heard that some schools will not/can not hire a teacher if the subject he is about to teach is not part of his degree. An additional degree would condense what I´ve done into something easily identifiable, but I see no way of doing it without causing further misunderstanding.

Re: The value of getting an additional degree?

Yeah, I will definitely be applying, and I know my English will not be too much of an issue once I get to an interview, although I´m not a native speaker. My concern in this post however, is how to portray further education to an employer in a succinct enough way. Ideas anyone?

Re: The value of getting an additional degree?

Thanks for your reply! I forgot to mention that I have a teaching certificate and four years of employment at a high school. I´ve been teaching in English, but unfortunately in the not so well known national curriculum of my country.

The value of getting an additional degree?

I have a dilemma. I´ve got a 5-year degree from a European University from a few years ago that officially translates to a master of education (including two subjects to teach+ pedagogics). I have no bachelor degree. I have since taken three full semesters each in two additional subjects that I´d like to teach. My original plan was to leave it at that, but I´ve noticed that a lot of recruiting sites are only interested in your degrees, not in additional separate course work. The only way for me to include these courses in a degree is to take out a bachelor degree. This would indeed condense them into a degree, but it would also look pretty weird, having a bachelor done after a masters. The worst problem is that I´m afraid that for someone quickly browsing my CV, it would be interpreted as being my first degree, an hence that my masters degree is only two years, instead of the actual five. My claims to be qualified to teach four subjects would then not be very credible, especially since the education system my degrees are from will already be unfamiliar to a recruiter used to British and American degrees. For this reason I´m leaning towards not getting the degree. Any opinions?

Re: Should I go for Geography or Economics, Teaching IBDP?

Is it a great disadvantage teaching Economics but not Bussiness and Administration? (i.e.will most Bussiness and Administration teachers also teach Economics, and hence be replaced by another teacher who can also teach both subjects?)

High School Teaching Conditions in the US?

Curious about how high school teaching in the US compares to the rest of the western world. I´ve seen stats showing that they teach more hours than any other country, the pay seems to be around average, but with good benefits. Employment doesn´t seem very secure, and teachers seem to get the blame for pretty much everything and enjoy little freedom. I have a feeling though, that I have only heard about the average schools, and that there is probably a greater span in quality compared to many other countries. Is it very hard for a foreign teacher of social sciences to get a position at a good school? Would IB be the best choice? Would the country be a good choice over Australia, Canada, the UK and New Zealand?

How To Read Up on the IBDP pedagogics on Your Own?

I can´t take a workshop right now, but surely there must be some text where I can read about it, to be able to express an understanding of the concept during interviews? The IB webpage doesnt provide any in depth information, and I havn´t found any books on the subject. Any ideas?

Should I go for Geography or Economics, Teaching IBDP?

I have a master of education for teaching philosophy and civics. I have also done two semesters each in economics and geography, and I´m contemplating studying a third semester in one of those if I don´t find a job this year. Which one would be most useful in landing a job?

What textbooks are most commonly being used at IBDP?

Looking at amazon for books titled something with "IB-diploma", I´ve seen the Oxford series, the IB-series, and independent ones. Was thinking of getting a couple for my subjects to browse, to get an idea of what I can expect to be teaching. Any general preferences? Do schools usually have them all?
