Re: Thailand and health check

Thank you both for weighing in. I was particularly curious if during the health check they ask if you are on any medication.

Thailand and health check

Hi all,

I am starting a new job in Thailand soon and have a question for anyone who has been through the health check. Since I have been a child, I have dealt with an anxiety disorder that is now completely managed with a low level SSRI. I am under the supervision of a doctor and haven't had any issues in over a decade.

Since I am never sure how mental health issues are seen abroad, I would love for this not to come up or have to explain it during the medical check. Does anyone who has been through this have any advice?

Thanks.

Re: Should I be worried about this job offer?

You said in your first post that you liked the school and would really love to work there. What are you basing this off of? Do you have any testimonials from people on the inside, or who used to work there? That could make a difference, I guess.

Re: Should I be worried about this job offer?

I would be worried, yes. If you do accept, prepare yourself for the worst, and then maybe you will be pleasantly surprised. Just go if you really want to be in Mexico and are desperate at this point.

Re: Police check for UAE and criminal record

It's an interesting discussion for sure. The idea of a morality spectrum hasn't been mentioned it before, and of course that would open up a whole different branch of the conversation altogether.

Glad to see some levity - so important for all of us to keep us sane in this crazy profession. Haven't been here that long, but it's clear that your presence on this board is such a benefit to so many, and I for one appreciate the idiosyncracies that go along with it. Probably because I'm never one to shy away from a good debate.

Re: Police check for UAE and criminal record

Ahhh PsyGuy, if you are going to become infamous on this board for demanding others hold each word of their arguments to a high standard of precision and correctness, you have to admit the Soviet Union slip is pretty funny. Got to play by your own rules, my man!

If you want us all to agree to your "It will all be fine as long as you don't get caught" premise...... well, sure.

I just think the bar of risk is so much lower when you are living in a foreign country where your channels are severly diminished (perhaps one ambassador who might help you out of a bind on his off hours?). Would I jaywalk in my hometown? Sure. Would I throw my gum on the ground in Singapore? Probably not.

Re: Police check for UAE and criminal record

Your point is that Edward Snowden has not been brought to justice for what he did - I suppose I could see how that is relevant here, if I really tried.

Giving data is fine, I will also chime in with my advice. I personally, would not want to test out ANYTHING illegal while living in a foreign country, much less the UAE. Just, why? Just don't. No amount of money could possibly justify the risk. My opinion.

Re: Police check for UAE and criminal record

Surely this last option would be highly illegal?? Would the benefits really outweigh the risks?

Thank you, everyone. Has anyone used Transferwise? Someone recommended that to me.

Transferring money Europe to US

I am closing out a contract this year and will need to move my pay out money (15,00 USD or so) to the US. Are there any legalities I need to consider? Any advice on the best way to do this? Thanks in advance.

Re: Is this salary good for a couple with a toddler in Musca

Totally agree with Psy that these are the minimum benefits you should negotiate/expect. Pretty standard at any school that considers itself decent. Moving to a new country with a young child (we're moving this year) is hard enough, you want to know that your school has teachers' backs for basic things like healthcare/tuition.

Re: after accepting offer from ISS website...

Doing research and being "sure" about a school will absolutely give you an idea if a school will act in a professional way or not. That's why this board exists, so you can get (limited) opinions. There are a bunch of other resources out there too.

In answer to your question, will the school bad mouth you if you break contract at this point? Quite possibly. Could ISS refuse to work with you again? Sure. If you break, those are big risks you have to be willing to take.
