Re: How do i know a schools tier?

I think that Sid has a point about cost of living. Although it can be quantified and is observable this is sometimes hard to do unless you are there (I know there are websites but I have not found a truly reliable one). If you are in KL and looking at Dubai it is hard to get an idea of different costs until you are on the ground.

Is ASParis one of the best schools in Europe? How did TP judge this? Package? School climate? Student body? Longevity of staff?

Re: How do i know a schools tier?

Imagine you were a parent...

Look at the school from that perspective. Resources, Class size, facilities are all going to draw in families. This will lead to higher tuition. This is not 100% accurate but you can get a real sense of a school from this.

There are very few Tier 1 for profit schools. Name a city and the best school is usually the non-profit school that caters to the embassy kids and expat business kids. The exceptions are oil schools but these are usually non-profit in a way as the school is a perk of the company and not trying to 'make' money.

Is there a Tier 1 for profit school in a city that pays more then the non-profit? Is that out there?

Re: Question about PYP schools

Yes. Yes they will. You are an experienced PYP teacher. They don't have to pay to train you. You will do fine. I wouldn't mention the "I hate UK curriculum." bit and frame it more as 'My pedagogical style is more suited for the PYP."

Good luck

Re: future contract

There is always hope but you will find it tough to find a job with three dependents in Europe. Most schools will not look at you. It is getting harder in the ME and Asia to find schools that will take a family of 4 with one teacher.

There may be a few that will and the later you look the better chance you have. Good luck.

Re: Newly Graduated Teacher-Job Chances

Luck will be involved. However with the right attitude and a good interview you should get hired. I would focus on the Middle East, China and some places in South America.

I agree that UNI or Queens would be a good fairs for you but I would save my money and not do Search.

Look at for profit schools and you should do fine. The big thing is not to give up hope... you will have the most luck late in the game. Once you have cut your teach at a lower tier school move your way up.

Good luck.

Re: Individual School Fairs

If it is a school you really want then why wouldn't you go? If they are putting on their own fair they will be hiring at it.

Of course this depends on where you are and how much it will cost you to get there and if they have positions for you and if you feel like you have a legit shot at a job. Many HK teachers move around the schools in that city so they are having a fair to try and persuade teachers in the area to jump to that school.

@GRC

Thanks for your input.

One of the best connected people in international education is a member of this board and may have a negative slant on what you are attempting to do. This person has a great amount of respect on this board and people are constantly thanking them for their well thought out and informed posts. I'm sure this person is the HOS somewhere and we are just so lucky they come here to share the wisdom they have gleaned from years of being a know it all wherever they have lived and worked.

Good luck GRC.

Re: Shipping a car instead of buying or renting a new one?

@Psyguy

I know the resale value of a Yaris as I own one here. I'm on target with the price of a 5-6 year old car in decent shape.

Having a big car/SUV is nice but most teachers don't drive much... work and back. You also have to outlay a lot more cash. Desert driving is something that few do more then a couple of times unless you are really into it. It's hard on a car so I would suggest a safari to try that out.

At my school teachers drive everything from Minis to big 4x4s. It's personal preference.

Re: Shipping a car instead of buying or renting a new one?

Psyguy is obviously not a financial person...

Cost of late model used Yaris with low KMs.... 30,000-35000AED Registration and insurance 1000aed Repairs a year 1000AED

So a two year total is maybe 38000AED and that is high....

Rental of a car for about 10 months a year is 15000 so for two years 30000.

The thing is you can sell the Yaris at the end of two years and get 15000 at a minimum and after 1 year you sell it for 25-30. So buy that Yaris! Don't rent. Don't listen to Psyguy.

Re: Shipping a car instead of buying or renting a new one?

In the UAE they use GCC specs which are different then North American specs. This means that the lights are at slightly different angles and brightness, Air cons due to the extreme heat, Radiator capacity due to heat, etc

Right now there have been a lot more people leaving the UAE then entering so it is a buyers market for cars. Don't bring it. I also don't think you'd be allowed to 'fill' it.

I know people who do rent but it adds up... you can rent a Yaris for 1400dirham or buy a newish one for about 30,000dirham... at the end of a 2 year contract if you decide to leave then you can sell it and get some of that investment back. The poor teacher would not approve of the renting.

Re: Expat parents, please chime in...

My overall impression is that kids who move overseas for the first time will go through the same emotions and transition issues that you will do. The great news is that international students are very inviting and accepting of new students. Although it will take some time and some angst she will make friends and be fine. It will take a little time.

Since I don't know the school I will add one caveat. If the school has a high majority of students from the host country they can at times speak their native language and exclude the expat kids. Just something to be aware of.

Overall I expect she will have an awesome experience. Good luck.

Re: Getting our ducks in a row (teaching couple question, re

@psyguy...

Not to belabour this point but I was going back to the OP comment of wanting China, Korea or Japan. I understand what you are saying about EU schools and passports and the hiring timeline of EU schools with the teachers ability to give short notice.

As far as HK in concerned... I would rate a number of schools ahead of CIS in the city including most of the ESF, Chinese IS, maybe HKIS. To me they were 2nd tier when I worked at a fourth tier school back in the day there. So current blip might have even lowered them more. This is simply my opinion on it and I haven't done a lot of research on HK as I have no desire to return there.

Re: Getting our ducks in a row (teaching couple question, re

Psyguy... To me getting the $350 (or whatever it is) might be worth the loss with one of the companies. Once you have a settled account it is so much more easier to update then to have to go through the procedure again. Not doing that is worth the money to me especially if you end up in a school you want to leave in 2 years. I think I said in an earlier post that going to a fair depended on the cost of getting there and staying there.

Shekou is a nonprofit small school with a fairly good rep a short ferry ride to HK. CISHK is a huge school with (at the moment) a bad rep right in the thick of the city. They both offer easy access to Hong Kong and honestly if I was offered both of these... same job... I would go for Shekou at this time. Just my thought.

Re: Strothoff International School

Everyone wants something different. If everyone wanted exactly the same thing we'd all be applying to the same school.

Western Europe has definite advantages. I loved living there. I loved the culture and travel ops and I didn't save a lot but I saved enough and had I wanted to stay long term I had tenure and could have retired with a state and private pension.
