@psyguy

Do you think, once the pandemic is over MA going to change its online Pearson testing and move back to in-state/offline testing?

Re: 32K - Average Salary for International Teachers?

I would chime in my two cents.
British schools usually if they can(Budget allows), follow the qts master MPS payscale, it helps them attract teachers from the Uk,
American schools usually follow the American average salary, which can vary wildly across several states.
IB schools usually follow the average scales according to their Tier and geographic location. It is done according to the competing schools in the area. Of course, there can be no geographic average, if one is considering the schools in Latin America, etc, the global average takes a nosedive.
It seems irrelevant to even consider a global average in IE. Is there a global average for Doctors, Nurses, Engineers (Licensed professions)? I guess not. There are a lot of generalizations in my answer, so don't beat me to it. Take it with a pinch of salt.

Re: TES Community forums are now gone

Update, it has now gone forever, and not coming back.

here's the text from Tes

"You may have noticed that Community has been under maintenance for the past few weeks. This was due to some essential work to ensure that this separate platform was in line with the compliance standards of the rest of Tes.

This work raised several other issues and as a result, we wanted to let you know that Community will not be returning.

Today, there is a need, greater than ever before, to ensure security, safety, data integrity and reliability. The nature of the Community platform, its set-up, and how it has evolved, has made this a bigger and bigger challenge. Of course, engagement and interaction is still available through our many other channels.

Community has been part of the Tes website for several years. However, we have also seen that as people engage with information differently, fewer and fewer people are using Community. At the same time, we have seen more and more subscribe to other information sources, such as newsletters and websites, or simply engage with us and others through our social media channels.

Forum platforms like Community also come with justifiable legal and ethical responsibilities. This means that every comment and every subject on Community rightly comes with an expectation for Tes to ensure compliance. Over recent years, this has become increasingly difficult for us to support and so it risks some conversations moving from healthy debate into potentially offensive territory.

The combination of these factors means it simply isn’t viable to maintain Community going forward.

We know that there were still a number of people that used this forum on a regular basis, and we hope that through our other channels we can still offer you the opportunity to engage and support each other in the same way.

Of course, although this facility may be closing, it doesn’t mean that we aren’t looking at how we can host this kind of engagement again in the future, using new technology and a fresh approach.

Thank you for the many conversations."

Re: TES Community forums are now gone

I speculate that some big-name school, hired a team of lawyers, sued tes, or at least made them cease their activities for the time being until they cleaned the OTT forum due to the negative and easy to make out school reviews. I suspect there is widespread abuse of contract terms in this covid scenario, and the community might be a reflection of that.

Re: International school route vs. ESL teaching route

Both can be good depending on the country you are going to. In places like Japan/Taipei/Vietnam. The pay that one can have is almost the same as a lower-tier international school. For ex in Taipei, it's possible to make 100k NTD or more by teaching 30-40 contact hours a week. Yes, people do it. Or one can make 110k in an international school. The money is not that different. The only difference is the holidays.

Japan would be the same. it's not unheard of to make between 400k-500k yen by doing corporate business English( Though starting salaries are much lower), Similarly most international either pay the same/ some low tier ones even pay less.

However in the long run if you decide to have a family and raise kids, IS ex-pat benefits will be much more. However many teachers on this forum- like me, find it hard to get into proper/top IS, for reasons such as "licenses" "competition" etc.
ESL route is perfect for a beginner. One may even spin it off into teaching EAL in big IS's, and those positions most often pay the same as other subjects.

Re: Competitiveness in 2020

469,000 US teachers were laid off in 2020 according to Reuters. I do believe this year might be the most competitive/worst for recruitment when it comes to competition. Search alone has 1000+ candidates, for a few hundred positions.

Re: The dilemma, take the bait?

Weak in the sense when it comes to credentials and relative knowledge. I generally know my way around a classroom. Keep it disciplined enough to impart knowledge. Maintain a professional distance but still have a professional connection with children. However awkward it is to maintain good relations with different kinds of people, I can keep a neutral relationship with most.

I am unsure of the paperwork, As it is primarily a British curriculum school, there are things like a statement of work, Evidence of progress, all of which I generally do now. But it is not scrutinized to a high degree. Right now where I am at, It's fairly relaxed as to structure, to give some space to the teachers, and bring personal creativity to the classroom.
Another point of concern is, I am experienced in IT/ICT across grades. However, this position is for primary DT subject, There are units that are directly related to what I do now, But plenty is new to me. Hence the shortcoming. I believe if adequate support were to be given, with well-planned resources I believe there's nothing that I cant do. However, if I were to be thrown down a crucible of "Do everything from scratch" my shortcoming would start to show. And this is where I shall be shown the door.

The dilemma, take the bait?

So, I am a weak IS IT, candidate, it's usually difficult for me to find good schools.
A certain school dubbed as the best/top bilingual school in Thailand has shown some interest.
However, I feel it's only due to the covid scenario that such a school is showing some interest.
Usually, the staff over there are full QTS qualified and they have a scale comparable to the Uk QTS scale.

The handbook has a lot of things that spell out in what scenarios the contract may "Not" be renewed.
Now agreed the offer at hand is 40% more than what I get paid now, however, I am at peace as to where I am and have been so for many years.
The leap would mean uncertainty after the contract completion.

I do feel that once borders open and things are back to normal, I would be the first in line to let go of.

any thoughts or my fears are just in my head?

Re: Advice wanted- Making myself marketable

Thank you for the detailed post. It took me a while to realize the complexity of your answers. And researching each of those avenues. I shall be forever grateful for the advice given on these forums. Sometimes I find it hard to believe that such a wealth of knowledge is shared by Psyguy for free.
I decided to go through the CT/ MA pathway.
Honestly, the MA pathway seems to be the most plausible. Even if I cant certify myself in the Tech(Which I can though complex), there seem to be other options to get certified in as well. Also since MTEL can be taken at any Pearson venue it works out perfectly.

However, I tried to go through the MA way and hit a roadblock.
The first step was to register MTEL, this tells me to again register I need a MEPID number, Ok so to get this number I again need to go to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Educator Licensure and Renewal system (ELAR). Now again I need to register with ELAR, However, they are asking for SSN social security number, Which I do not have.
So I shoot ELAR people a mail as they mentioned on their registration form to contact incase one doesn't have an SSN.
It's been a while and it's a blank from their end. I think they prefer to receive calls rather than emails?

Anyone who actually got the MA provisional license, any pointers?

Re: Advice wanted- Making myself marketable

Okay, since I have been reading the new threads on this forum, a few new things have come to light. So I will add a few questions.

Is it possible to do the Florida exam in my case, then get the provisional level cert, Move to an American school overseas(wasc accredited), Then use the 3-year work experience to be used for a Hawai professional credential? And then possibly lead to QTS? Yeah, many steps. But as of now, I don't have 6000 USD lying around for teach now, maybe in the future. I was thinking of going the AO route in future if I transitioned into a BSO School. But again, even AO route costs 2000 USD. And chances of me getting a BSO school seems slim.

While getting a Tech centered credential is important for me, getting marketable is important as well. I specifically mentioned this pathway, as Teachnow seems rather expensive, and if I can do the Florida provisional license with just giving an exam, I would be more than willing to do that pathway to QTS.

Advice wanted- Making myself marketable

Hi all,
I am currently a Teacher of ICT and Technology at a Bilingual School in Thailand.
I hold a CELTA, Several British Council certifications on teaching IELTS, a Bachelor's of Arts and Law, M. ed In International Education (Non-licensure track), several PD's on ICT, A Thai teaching license in the works. 3 years of K-12 classroom experience in my school.

I have been looking to gain a teaching license from either the US, UK, or Canada. Since I am not a citizen in any of those countries, programs like teacher ready, teach now etc won't help me, I enquired they need a US social security number as well as travel to the US to complete certain exams. Nor do I want to spend 10,000 USD+ on studying something online as I can't really afford it.

Most US states do not even have a licensure program for my subject, ICT/ Technology Integration, Computing.
Does anyone know of any particular state licenses (Not particularly in my subject) that are hopefully lifetime and can be done online or in any of the Pearson centres across the globe?
I do not intend to work in the States, Canada or Uk. But its something I need to make myself more marketable when it comes to Search or ISS fairs. Some people have suggested getting my Thai license converted to Ontario teaching license, I do not know how is that possible if I don't intend to work there at all. People who did it are working in maple leaf schools across the globe.

Any advice or mentoring would be appreciated.
