I have feiends at Carole Morgan and they like it. Good school and probably one of the best, if not the best, salaries in the Carribean.

Yes, he is considered a dependent. Though flights aren't always a guarantee--though it is nice if it is--the school does have to mess with visas for him and your kids. It is likely he would be a cost for the school for medical insurance as well.

It is not a complete roadblock to hiring--it wasn't for me-- but it makes you less attractive.

I do think the fact that he will be earning a wage is relevant, though, so I would be sure to have that info featured prominently somewhere.

A request: Fair Diaries Please!

As it is getting to be that time of year, I just wanted to send out a humble request to those recruiting this year: think about doing a "fair diary" here on the forum, in the style of shadowjack or pippafrit ( and others) from last year.

They were engaging and informative for both the writers ( Im guessing) and we the audience.

I promise I will do one when my turn comes up!

:-)

Pretty easy to get a phone wherever you go. That said, it seems like more and more people are just unlocking their iphones and setting something up locally.

I got my current job-- been here 5 years-- on the Sunday morning of a fair. If you have gone through all the trouble of a fair, I would not be in a hurry to get out of there.

Probably depends on your work schedule too. Do you have to work on Monday?

How marketable are you?

Havent heard of anything unusual going on there. I have met and worked w a few people from this school and they were bright and fun. Salary is decent for Mexico. 1:1 environment. Guadalajara is a pretty cool city.

Agreed. I'm sure this varies from school to school. Spanish language would certainly seem to be a boon in that dept., but it doesn't seem to be a roadblock, at least in Mexico.

...also, interteach, I disagree (respectfully) with your first statement. US schools, public or private, must have licensed/certified teachers to become accredited. However, some, though not many these days, I'm guessing, just choose not to get accredited, as they don't necessarily need that to be a high quality, successful school.

This is at least true in the state I am from. Might be different state to state.

I have read that some countries--turkey comes to mind--require that your degree be in the subject you are teaching. This has been on my radar screen as I am certified to teach things that aren't my major.

Can anyone confirm this?

Probably depends on where you want to get hired. I know that AASA fair is all South America and a fair bit of hiring goes on there.

Great country to work in. Great food, diverse landscape, good national bus system, reasonable cost of living for the lowish salary you'll be receiving. Warm people too, though my chilango friends tell me Mexico City folks are a bit like NYC people.

To work in Mexico, you will need to get all your state docs--birth certificate, teaching license, etc.--apostilled by your state Secretatary of States office.

I have been to the UNI fair. Some thoughts:

- they have been doing it a long time. The oldest fair I'm told
- friendly, professional people to work with
- nonprofit, so different than SA in that sense
- lots of newer teachers, but I wasn't new when I went and ran into many who weren't either
- lots of actual hiring going on there;I had 7 interviews and three offers; ihad multiple dependents too
- schools from all over, especially S. Amer. (got interviews from England, Mexico, Kuwait, Peru, Egypt, India)
- when I went, I believe it was about 150 schools and probably 600 teachers
- good timing of fair; not so early they are waiting on something better and not so late all the good jobs are gone
-$3400 a month for S. Amer. would likely be on the rare side (unless you include housing, perks)

As you can tell, I had a pretty good experience. Never done SA, so maybe it is good too.

The info UNI gives you is a bit more comprehensive than TIE. the UNI info looks similar to the SA info.

Car over the summer?

I am spending my summer back home in the US and don't have a car, but need a car (public transport not an option in this area, borrowing from friends or family for such a long stretch not likely).I am renting one currently and the cost, especially with insurance, is huge. $1500 for a month.

What do those of you in similar situations do for car access? How about short term car insurance?

Dependents don't help, of course, but I too went to a fair w two dependents, had many interviews, and various offers. We have been pretty happy where we landed.
