Asking Friends/Former Colleagues for Help in Hiring

I was curious what advice you have for asking friends and/or former colleagues for help in the job search?

Some are closer friends, so it's easier to be up front with them, but in trying to utilize my larger network for job search purposes, I'm a bit nervous. I want to be professional and polite. But I ultimately want them to help me as much as they are able in landing me my next position.

Any dos/don'ts from your experience on either end of this equation? Is it okay to send them your CV? Ask them to talk to their director/principal?

Re: Is an EU passport an advantage?

How do put that on your CV, appropriately?

And what if the teacher has the EU passport, but the wife and kid don't? Does that change your desirability for the schools?

Re: Etiquette and expectations

Has Search changed their policy?

My friend is English and did not have to pay for Search membership. Something about British laws?

Re: Contract ? – Typically how comprehensive are IS contract

My experience has been that the contracts havent always included what gets talked about orally. That said, I have been satisfied with director follow through on oral promises.

True, but as Coach from "Cheers" taught us: "It borders on the Adriatic!"

As the unofficial fair diary cheerleader and judge, I give this one an "A".

Thanks for sharing and congratulations on landing your positions.

Re: UNI Fair ?

In general? Or this year?

In general, I thought it was a great fair: professional, affordable, and schools were hiring!

As for this year, I look forward to some fair diaries...

Re: ichiros

Ah, how I miss ichiro...

I say go for it. It is not for everyone, and I don't think it is something I or a lot of others could pull off, but it sounds like it's you. You went through the trouble of having them created, so this must be in your wheelhouse.

AND you're a teaching couple.
AND it's just an ichiro.
AND this is just something to slide into a box to try to land an interview.

You could certainly include a standard cv too.

I think you want to go for it. It's you, so do it.

Re: How did you get your International School career started

I have a bachelor of arts, a teaching license, and taught in the States for ten years before going to the UNI fair.

Great fair, especially for those new to int. teaching.

Re: Mexico City

Mexico City is an amazing city. Lots to offer, culturally.

I know people who work at ASF and they love it. I have been to the campus for a conference and I thought it was an impressive facility. I hear the compensation is quite good for the Western hemishere too.
