Re: Westhill Institute, Mexico City

One of my friends in Mexico City told me that the school is known for having students with bad behavior, and she knows a lot of teachers who have left the school.

Got a job!

I just accepted an offer for a great school (Tier 1) in a good location. I'm not posting this to brag, but to say that jobs are still out there. Keep applying to schools. You will get something. Good luck, everyone!

Re: Student Loan Payments

I'm an American who has probably (I don't know) $80,000 in student loans. My father is the co-signer, and I send $600 via WesternUnion to him. I'll have to pay for probably 20 years, but I guess that's the price I paid for private education. I work in Mexico, by the way.

Re: How bad is Mexico?

If you didn't think Guatemala City was bad, then Mexico should be fine. There are really only four states that are considered dangerous for foreigners: Chihuahua, Durango, Coahuila, and Tamaulipas (all located on the U.S. border). I live in the north of Mexico (Monterrey to be exact) and have been to Durango and Coahuila and haven't had problems since I've been here. No pickpockets, no muggings, nothing. Most homicides in Mexico are due to drug violence and not towards foreigners. Be smart when you travel throughout Mexico, and you should be fine. Check out the website below for more statistics:

You get a housing allowance, and it's in cash. I have no idea how many hours teachers teach per day, but I'm guessing it's probably an average amount. Most of the students are Mexican, yeah.

My contacts told me that the Diaz Ordaz campus is more organized than the other campus in the south of the city. The staff are happy and are paid 22,000-26,000 pesos (including housing). The English level of the students (and the academic rigor) isn't as high as other schools in Monterrey. The teachers don't have guard duties. Also, the parents are supportive. What else do you want to know?

The city has its ups and downs. It has good nightlife if you're into that. The public transportation system is also good. The Mexicans in Monterrey are colder than the stereotypical Mexicans (i.e. friendly) that you hear about, although there are exceptions of course. The city has a lot of Western cuisine. I haven't had any problems with pickpocketing or other dangerous things, and I take the public transportation to work everyday.

What else do you want to know?
Ours is pretty colorful. I honestly don't mind sharing what we did, but I don't want to post it here (it has our names on it as well as the names of some administrators). If you leave your e-mail I can share it with you.

Essentially, we made a very bright and colorful one that had a lot of big, bold lettering. It included several pictures of stuff we did in the classroom (The Daily 5 or classroom management techniques as some examples). We also threw on some quotes from reference letters we have.
Can you send it to me, too? My email is coreyshea2@gmail.com

Thank you!

CV Question

If I have only worked at two schools, how can I make my CV longer? Right now it's about 2/3 of a page. Should I stick with three bullet points per position? Also, I have a degree in Education and an American teaching license, so can I include a teaching position at a school if I was a middle school English teacher (it was post-certification). Or was that technically an ESL position?

Thank you in advance for the help. It would be great if PsyGuy could weigh in on this.

I agree with everything that the previous posters said, especially the part about learning Spanish. Mexicans expect you to learn Spanish and typically won't speak English to you in social situations (my experience) even if they are fluent in it. What city will you be moving to?

My first school set up a debit card for me. The second school set up an ATM card for me and told me that they didn't have debit cards in the country. The third school (in the same country) set up a debit card for me.

My worst experience was at my last school. Two of my colleagues left in October, and my boss asked me to take a lie detector test because he didn't believe me when I told him that I didn't know why they left. I told him no, and he continued to argue with me about how, if he was me, he would take the test because he would have nothing to hide. Then, he told me that he was going to take extra money out of my paycheck to cover the rent of our apartment since they left. That school was a mess and a half.
