Re: Recruiters wary of teachers with admin aspirations?

Always tough to predict what any given admin type will do. Some might have a negative reaction such as you describe. Many might see your interest/training as a potential resource they could use (or even exploit in the short term) presuming that they viewed your teaching credential/experience as worthy of being hired/

On the whole it's probably close to a wash, leaning towards a positive to include it.

Re: Inactive but Valid Certification

Other input may vary but my opinion/guess is that some schools and countries (for visa purposes) may consider it an issue. Technically, you are not a “certified” teacher if you are not currently/actively certified from some entity or organization.

Like I said, others may have more specific/informed feedback.

It is possible. People often believe that a serial cheater would never cheat on him/her and are ready to settle down because they have finally met someone worth giving all of that up for. Of course they are also usually wrong.

Well, by his employment timeline, he has been working for DoDEA for 7 years now, so he is not likely to have been dealing with anything IB related on a regular basis and is losing touch (with reality at times).

At least he didn’t keep trying to make LW happen.

Wow, so then that Hitler guy shouldn’t really be considered such a bad hombre since he was never actually convicted of anything. Good to know, because I’m sure I’ve been guilty of maligning his character over the years. Or have I, since I was never convicted of slander or libel? PG World can be a very confusing place at times.

Re: DODEA Recruitment Job Fairs?

Not really at the time but looking back, maybe. It was a strange experience. Similar to int’l fairs but much more subdued and regimented (kind of like working for the gov’t at times). Basically you showed up, waited your turn and were called into a big room of desks and table for a 30 minute interview a principal from somewhere in the world. And that was it. I have no idea if it helped my case but I did get to speak to an HR Supervisor while I was in the building about my HR rep and they did prompt her to fix my cert areas (and a couple of months later I was hired). So, I guess it was worth the flight from Asia, just for that hour os so total time in the building.

Re: Are there any ex-teachers on this board?

I would agree that a history of 2 and out and is not necessarily a deal breaker or even a huge red flag for many schools. I do think though it is one factor that can be compared unfavorably to other candidates who have a history of longer stays with at least one school (and I say that as someone whose longest stay was only two years before being hired with DoDEA).

It does make sense if you are honest with yourself. If you leave after two years, then it generally means that you started looking for a new job after one year (or so) at the school. While that doesn’t always mean that you would be totally checked out after one year, it’s human nature to not be totally engaged and committed mentally and/or emotionally if you know you have one foot out the door already (and current/prospective admin types are aware of this).

Grand Canyon University has a very good SPED program (definitely online, don't know about blended).

Re: Online or 'blended' masters degrees?

Other opinions may differ but I would say that it does not really matter all that much whether your masters is online, face to face or blended. I have a masters that was totally online but you would not know it from looking at my diploma or transcripts (unless there is some secret code that I am unaware of) and it never was an issue that stopped me (or was even mentioned) from getting any of my jobs or obtaining a visa.

If it concerns you, then make sure you go with a university that has a brick and mortar component and is not just/primarily an online entity. (e.g. U. of Phoenix).

In general, it seems like where you obtained your degree from does not matter that much unless it happens to be from a very elite school, is from a school recognized for that particular field and/or someone in the interview process also went there.

Not Sid, but probably because a number of people are all too willing to lie about their experiences to cover up a bad situation. Possibly because of some other .'s unprofessionalism/wrong doing (e.g. incompetent/bullying leadership, horrible students/unreasonable parents, etc.) but possibly because of some wrong doing on their part (e.g. child safety issues, incompetence, bad attitude, etc.).

Probably because many people can fake their way through a lesson or two and/or put together a portfolio (e.g. including serial killers, pedophiles, flakes and other assorted goofballs you would not want as co-workers or to teach your children).

I can't really comment on how valid or efficient linkedin references would be at verifying successful experience and performance since I have not done much with it besides create a profile years back then got tired of the emails/spam.

Re: FTCE Exams - Teacher Ready

I took most of them a long time ago. I took the SPED Subject Area test a couple of years ago to get credit for re-certification (I'm lucky enough to have access to an overseas military base and could take it online through the Education Center) and found it pretty easy.

There is a board on Teachers.net for FL teachers and most posts seem to be about the tests. You might check it out and post some questions there:
