Trebleclef,
I'm glad to hear that you have been so fortunate. Did you register with Search/go to a fair or go it alone? Still no luck for us but we keep sending in applications...we're not ready to give up entirely just yet.

I'm not 100% sure about that, psyguy. We're not only looking at 'tier 1' schools. We've applied to schools in Turkey, and I'm pretty sure they're not tier 1. We just don't want to be in a place like Saudi Arabia where I'd have to cover up and walk around with my husband all the time. We also applied to QSI and were told they didn't have positions for us...and from what I heard nobody considers that a tier 1 school.

I think the reason why we're receiving a lot of 'no's may be because we're being particular about the schools where we want to work. We aren't unhappy in our current jobs in the US, we just really want to switch to International Teaching, which means we're not desperate to take a job in any school anywhere in the world. (We have a 2 year old and I'm not ready to take her to a country where she would be unhappy.)

Of course, our 'sorry no thanks' replies might be because we're not good candidates too...who knows.

I think for this year we will keep sending out applications to schools that are listing openings on TIE and then if that doesn't work, join Search and get our rec. letters done over the summer.

Wait for next year?

So my husband and I have received several 'thanks but no thanks' replies. We decided to go it alone and did not pay the $200 Search fee. We applied to schools on our own. (A quick recap he's a social studies and ICT teacher with a MA in tech integration working as a 12 month tech ICT admin now and I'm a 10 year veteran French teacher with a MA in French).
My question is, should we just call it quits for this year and pay Search next year and hit the fairs? Are we just wasting our time at this point?

Yeah, unfortunately like you I don't think my husband and I are going to succeed in finding jobs this year. It seems like all the good jobs are already taken. I'm starting to regret not signing up with Search.

China?

My husband and I have not had much luck finding jobs in Europe so far, which is not a huge surprise based on what I've read on this board and the fact that while we both have MAs, 10 years experirence, and he's cert. in technology ICT as well as S.S. neither of us has taught abroad before.
So my question is: is China a decent place to teach and to live? Reviews I've read so far have been mixed. It seems like the pay is decent and there are definitely more jobs posted for schools in China but some people seem to have had really negative experiences. We're both fond of history and beauty (which is why we've always liked living and travelling in Europe) and we have a 3 year old daughter as well.
Any advice. opinions, personal experiences would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

CV

My husband and I have searched through a ton of sample CVs online for International teachers and each one has a completely different format and different info on it. Can anyone tell us where to find a sample CV that we should go by or what schools actually want to see on it?
We'd really appreciate it!

More great information from all of you helpful veterans!
We will send applications to European schools too with our fingers tightly crossed.
We're starting to question our middle east idea after reading some of your responses and some other threads. It seems like a lot of teachers favor Asia after Europe rather than the ME.
Ah, now another region for us to research...but I guess this is just half the fun.

Even though we'd love to live in Europe, we figured after reading through these boards that we'd probably have to start out in the middle east. I've noticed that on these boards people don't (or won't) always say where they've worked that was nice and not so nice. Can anyone give us an idea about what a nice school to teach at in the middle east would be? A place that's reputable and where we could also save some money?
If you can't say for anonymity reasons, we understand.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the great info psyguy. I had a feeling French would be hard to sell outside of the U.S.

The English test is in January and the results would come back right before the Feb fair in Cambridge so I should be able to study for and pass that test in time to throw it on my CV.

I'm also happy to know that my husband is an in-demand candidate. Hopefully someone will take me in order to get him :-)

And one more quick question if you don't mind... I'm certified French K-12 so should I be trying to market myself as an elementary school teacher too?

Newbie with a question

Hi everyone!

My husband and I are looking into finding jobs in an international school. He's certified in social studies and IT and I'm certified in French (with a MA as well). We've both been teaching for 10 years.

In our state if you can pass the Praxis II exam in another subject area you are granted certification in that area. My question is: would it be a good idea for me to try to take the English test in order to have more opportunities for finding a job or would it not make a difference to an international school since I will not have actual experience teaching English, just a certification to do so.
Thanks in advance for your responses.
