How would you rate your new school?

As many of you'll be relocating to a new school in a new country, how many of you would rate / view positively your new school in terms of student diversity, facilities / resources, leadership, compensation, PD, work-life balance etc.?

Did any of you already visit your new school over the spring break?

Re: Obtaining a UNI Diploma in the International Baccalaur

@PaulJorg
Some of the best AP and IB teachers I have seen and worked with have all learned about IB methodology at some school before they became examiners and workshop leaders. They never went back to their home countries to get IB certification, which has no real meaning. You learn much more on the job and working with kids than attending some exorbitant course which doesn't give much insight into the curriculum.

It is practically impossible for all IB schools to hire experienced IB teachers. As long as a teacher is fully certified in the subject he or she teaches and has a strong pedagogical content knowledge, it doesn't matter what curriculum they teach. IB is not rocket science. One can learn the ropes within a few months.

Hope this topic is not further hijacked by some sentimental or corporate parent who knows very little about about how education systems work.

Re: Obtaining a UNI Diploma in the International Baccalaur

I'd rather look at some decent Tier 2 IB schools which are willing to hire me and send me to those workshops, gain a couple of years of DP experience and then aim higher.

Re: ISKL?

If you are planning a peaceful retirement, working at schools like ISKL (or any top tier school in and around that region) is the way to go.
You can have a lot of fun in Europe, but the real money and savings is in places like s.e.asia.

Re: Korea International School

As long as you are at a decent school, the rest depends on your initiative. Raise the bar, teach like a pro, showcase your student work on a blog / website, use tech to teach lessons creatively, master differentiation in the classroom, document your students' accomplishments (not just grades). Your awesomeness will fetch you the grand prize.

Re: Tips for a first year teacher

Tips: collaborate with your team, model classroom behavior and use creative ways to attract attention of students (e.g., show what 40 minutes mean), involve students in framing classroom rules and be very consistent and firm with them, spend a disproportionate amount of time with your weaker students, give high quality feedback, provide multiple opportunities for students to ask questions, praise student work (not students themselves), have a journal to take note of what worked and what didn't (even, surgeons have one these days), document sample evidence of your student learning and use it during parent-teacher conferences (parents won't argue much when they see hard facts at hand), communicate with your students' parents, particularly the weaker ones and warn them ahead of time if their kids are in danger of failing, and most of all, celebrate student success.

Warnings: don't sign up for too many committees, don't hesitate to say 'No' at some point

Re: Chances of landing a decent job?

@SpedMaestro
It was, not anymore. Too much parental interference, no job security, spineless leadership, lack of resources, no clear admission policy all make up a lethal pedagogical cocktail.
