Re: Is the ABCTE Maths teacher course a good option?

Thank you for the information. Why exactly the Massachusetts provisional license should I go for? How about sitting the PRAXIS maths content exam and apply to the OSSE in DC? Do you think that would be a fairly wise option to go for in order to get the teaching license in maths?

Is the ABCTE Maths teacher course a good option?

Hey guys,

I have been teaching languages for 10 years, but I am planning to ditch my main subjects in favour of maths.

I have a BA and a PGCEi. I was wondering if the ABCTE Maths course is a good option to do so. I am also planning to sit the Maths PRAXIS exam in May, but that alone might not be enough.

Has anyone switched to Maths successfully? If yes, what is the best way to approach this matter?

Thank you.

I dont mind working towards the "higher value" credential.

It will take 3 PRAXIS tests in my case, but first I need to figure out what is going on. When I posted this, I literally had 0 knowledge of the PRAXIS exams. I dont mind preparing for them and paying for them, but I will never pay 3000 pounds for the British QTS/AO (Mickey Mouse) course. :P

I know that TeachNow is not an accreditor, but their certificate helps a lot more than a PGCEi when it comes to obtaining US credentials.

Unfortunately a PGCEi doesn't lead to a QTS if the classroom experience is not from a school that uses the UK Curriculum. That's my case. I have been teaching at an IB school.

Taking the PRAXIS exam abroad.

Hi,

I have a BA and a PGCEi from the UK. 10 years of teaching experience and I am considering the option of getting the US teaching credential (btw, I am an EU citizen).

I have looked at the different steps (see screenshot). Step 3 is not relevant to my case. I am planning to teach English/Spanish (I did these 2 subjects as part of my 1st degree).

However, step 4 is that of the PRAXIS exam, right? It looks like prometric.com offers the PRAXIS exam globally.
How do I know which state would accept my current experience and qualifications? Has anyone gone through this process successfully while living outside of the USA?

Obtaining teaching credentials

Hey guys,

I have decided to get the QTS (or anything that is equivalent to it). There are a few things I do not really understand though.
I have a BA and a PGCEi from the England. I believe the UK route would be the easiest one, but: are there any other globally recognized teaching credentials that schools wants teachers to have (apart from the QTS)? It looks like US teaching credentials are accepted by a lot of schools abroad (well, that is what they ask for in their ads). How about Canadian, Australian (or even EU...like Swedish, Finnish) teaching credentials? I am just looking at the different options at this stage that might result easier to go for. I have looked into the US credentials a bit, but most of the straightforward options are for those with social security numbers with I dont have. What shocked me was that Teach Now even asked me to do their 6000-dollar course in order to get a DC credential, but I already have a PGCEi. So, obviously they are not being transparent and want to make money (I guess it is normal, but it is still a bit absurd).

By the way, it looks like one could get a QTS while working at a school abroad where the English Curriculum is taught. One can create a portfolio and after a visit from an inspector (or whatever the title is), the QTS is awarded. If this is the case, then why are universities offering pricey AO route courses for those who wish to get the QTS?
For example, the London Metropolitan University offers a 12-week (not kidding....12 weeks) for 3000 pounds. That is super expensive.

I know I am not really asking any super specific questions in my post, but I am looking for guidance and the easiest option in order to become a qualified teacher. The process feels like going through a maze littered with expensive uni courses and admin/gov employees that talk in riddles. :)

Re: What PD shall I got for with a BA and a PGCEi?

I totally agree. The problem is that it takes a lot of planning to get credentials.

I have my heart set on the QTS (or US teaching credentials), but that is not something a 700-dollar PD allowance can help me get. I will work on this matter when the time has come.

Thank a lot for the information guys!!! Much obliged.

Re: What PD shall I got for with a BA and a PGCEi?

Hey Psyguy,

Thanks a lot for the information.

At this stage the teaching credential is not vital to me. It is mainly for those who want to teach at state schools and I am not planning to do so. The MA is a good idea. However, I am not planning to work as a leader, it might be a bit of an overkill.

I think I'll do the IB Certificate course online. It is way over my PD budget, but I dont have to do all the modules in 1 year.

Then again...thanks a lot for keeping teachers informed.

What PD shall I got for with a BA and a PGCEi?

Hey guys,

This is a bit of a vague question, but I would like to improve my CV with an online course.

I am an IB teacher (English/Spanish) with a BA in languages and a PGCEi.

I have a budget of 600 euros to do a PD course online.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? If yes, please share your experience.

Cheers.

Which state offers a teaching license to a PGCEi holder?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if a PGCEi can lead to a US teaching license for someone who is abroad. I am in China and I would remain here for another year or so, but I would like to apply online and get a US teaching license. My questions are the following:

1, Which state in the US offer a license to a PGCEi holder?
2, Can it be done online?
3, If it is an initial license, can it be upgraded after a certain number of years?

Thank you.

Becoming a subject teacher at international schools. How?

Hey guys,

The subject of this post is kind of vague. I have a BA in English and Spanish, plus I have just obtained my PGCEi (went down the British route of becoming an ESL teacher).

I have been working as an ESL teacher for 10 years, but I wouldn't mind studying a little bit more (online) and becoming an IT teacher. Googling the "how to become a subject teacher after a BA" did not help me much.

Has anyone done an online course that helped him/her become a subject teacher?

Cheers

QTS AO Route after graduation(PGCEi - Nottingham University)

I am sure this has been asked a few times, but I just cant find it.

So, let me ask: has any of you managed to get the QTS after the PGCEi (Nottingham University)? I am interested in the fastest route and it looks like there are some 12-week courses, but most of them are really expensive (almost 4k pounds..insane). Has anyone found a relatively cheap one that sticks to that 12-week timeline?

Thank you.

Re: Has anyone managed to get a QTS or US license with a PGC

@PsyGuy

Firstly, I would like to thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Please, let me know if you have any experience with TEA and Teachers of Tomorrow. TEA has encouraged me to register an account and go through the credential transfer process (through a 3rd . agency). They want to find out whether or not my degrees and experience are accepted by the the state of Texas. They said that they had several teachers who were based outside of the USA find employment in Texas after the credential transfer. I do understand that an English-Spanish degree might not be a desired one there, but I guess I'll give it a go anyway.

I was also offered a course by Teachers of Tomorrow which seems to lead to a Texas licence, but I have no idea (I am still researching) how it is different from the teach now courses and if I even need it after the Nottingham PGCEi. Do you happen to know much about them? Do you recommend them?

@PsyGuy I hear you. I made the mistake of going for the Nottingham one.
I have seen some of your posts elsewhere regarding work experience that might count positively towards a US teaching license application. Would you say that IB (an official school in China) counts? If yes, it only counts after obtaining the PGCEi degree, right?

@PsyGuy

That is interesting what you our saying about PGCEi courses. My 3rd module was totally about teaching and I had to evaluate a lesson sequence that I taught to IB students. Anyways....thanks for sharing that link. I'll send to teachersoftomorrow a message and see if it's the right option for me. Much obliged.
