How much easier to get hired as local hire at decent school?

Asking for a friend.

He'll soon receive QTS, but has no experience at an international school. He's planning to go to Singapore to be with his girlfriend, who already teaches there.

Since he just wants to get the 2 year experience under his belt, is it smarter to go to Singapore first, and then try to get hired as a local hire?
Will a decent school be more likely to hire him, since it will be cheaper than a overseas hire? (all other things being equal)

He would rather work for a decent school without benefits, than for a crappy school with benefits.

Or don't schools think this way when hiring?
Or will the only schools that think this way be the crappy schools anyway?

Cheap and easy (online) Masters?

Asking for a friend.
She is going to be working at an international school where having a Masters leads to a huge pay raise.

Any recommendations for a cheap and easy (online) Masters-education?

She's a Maths teacher (as most of my friends are, I just realised), although not sure if it matters to schools what Masters you have?

I think if the teacher is female, and the non-working spouse is male, the school won't be able to get a visa for the husband. I remember one of the international schools in Oman knows a way around it, but it's illegal to do so.

Also, gay and lesbian couples might have problems is some countries.

Re: Question from an international school math teacher

I'd recommend obtaining a M.A. Educational Leadership. There are many places that offer online courses for this.
Climbing the ladder will be easier with an M.A. (most senior leadership has one), and the Educational Leadership M.A. makes most sense.

In addition, it might make most sense to stay at your Tier 2 school instead of moving to a Tier 1 school, since the lower tier the school is, the easier it will be to rise through the ranks. Once in leadership and having some experience there, move up to Tier 1 (if that's where you want to end up of course – nothing wrong with being at Tier 2 or 3).

Getting a job at American school after only BS/IB-schools?

Is it easy or hard for a female (Canadian) Maths teacher to get a teaching position at an American school, after having taught exclusively at British/IB schools?

Most of the good schools in the locations we're looking at are American schools.
I'm not sure how keen American schools are on hiring a non-US teacher, although there's a fair amount of US teachers at British schools usually.
I'll have 12 years of experience, but have a trailing spouse and child.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Healthcare insurance after retiring in Asia?

When I think about retiring in Asia after teaching, it seems to make financial sense – lots of things are cheaper, plus we really like the region.
Health insurance however will be expensive as far as I can tell.
Does anyone have a good (and affordable) plan for health insurance during their retirement in Asia?

What do the most-used acronyms on this forum mean?

In some topics acronyms are being used a lot, and while some are obvious (IS, IT, etc.), some are not. It almost seems like sometimes some people want to impress others by using as many of them as possible, or don't realise not everyone knows all these acronyms. I'm sometimes lost, and Googling them doesn't always help.
Can anyone produce a list of the most-used ones?

I've got a short list here:

ITT = ?
EPP = ?
DS
DE
 = ?
QTS = Qualified Teacher Status
NQT = Newly Qualified Teacher?
BS = ?
SEC = ?
EP = ?
ET = ?
OP = Original Poster
SES = ?
MPS = ?
IOC = ?
SEN = ?
LCSA = Latin or Central & South-America?
EAP = ?

Any additions/solves?

How are you preparing for retirement financially?

Just wondering how you all are preparing for the days after your teaching careers.
Have you bought real estate, invested in index funds, simply saved, paid into pension plans, or something else?
Just wondering what the pros and cons of these different strategies are, and which ones make most sense.

So far we have done nothing more than saved a nice little sum, but investing it in some way is probably smarter.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Which subjects can you teach with Political Science degree?

After getting QTS, what subjects would you be able to teach with a Bachelors degree in Political Science?

Are those subjects taught at many schools, and is there a surplus or a shortage of teachers for those subjects on the international circuit?

Thanks in advance!

Teacher couple at different schools in same city – how?

If a teaching couple (with two kids) teaches at different schools in the same city (because of the huge difference in employability – the wife is a seasoned Maths teacher and the husband is new to teaching), how does it work with the benefits of both schools?

Do you assign the two children to be the official dependents of one of the teachers (the seasoned teacher at the better school preferably), to get flights, free tuition, health insurance, and extra housing allowance for those two dependents (the kids) under her contract, and have the other one contracted as 'without dependents'? (receiving only flights as benefits, making him more attractive for a school since he doesn't have experience yet)

Would you both receive housing allowances?

How would this work?

Thanks in advance!

Any tips on paths to leadership if not a teacher?

Hi,

I'm an IT myself, and my husband is considering going into teaching himself.
Even though I'm very sure he would be a good teacher, I think he would be even better in management, and although he hadn't thought about that yet (not thinking it was an option), after I mentioned it, he's got very excited about the idea.

I know almost all leadership positions at IS are filled by former teachers, but is it possible to get into leadership if you haven't been teaching?

Are there certain Master degrees (MA Educational Leadership I assume) to obtain to make yourself attractive to an IS, or other degrees of certifications, or will schools always prefer former teachers for leadership roles, and simple not hire those who haven't taught?

Any input will be greatly appreciated!
