Re: Search Job Fair 2017

Am I missing something? You want school psychology positions? What is your experience in school psychology?

Re: Choosing the right fair..

You need to join SA or ISS NOW to have any chance of getting a handle on whether or not fairs in the next six months are even possible for you.

I personally prefer SA, but I don't like them. That's the nature of the beast. Lots of Asia with Iowa, SA, and ISS. I think Iowa is the cheapest.

Keep watching CNN and MSNBC and I am sure all will be well for you! Ha ha. Everyone is so surprised by the election result even though polls indicated this was quite possible for weeks. The reaction says more about the thoughtless sanctimonious "educated elite" than it does about anything else. Many such people watch CNN and MSNBC and feel they are watching reality. Enjoy!

Re: Teaching couple and increasing our marketability

1. Yes, you would still be marketable to schools that regularly have a good amount of attrition in their elementary school
2. No, good schools want people with experience in the subjects that they are hiring them to teach
3. Nothing you can do in the time you have indicated you have before recruiting

One more note: if you are just dating your partner, you are really not a teaching couple. You are two people who want to end up in the same place together. You are more valuable to schools married, but you may want to target schools in the same city as long as you are not married. Good luck.

Re: Shorter Year than 180 Days

Another terrific topic that only lends credence to those who say teachers are lazy and looking for the easiest job possible to heck with whether or not their students are learning! Well done for perpetuating this perspective. Sadly there is a sizable minority of teachers this describes perfectly, but I do believe it may very well be a majority of international school educators.

Re: No experience in IB - would I be hired

Of course, at ones where they want an independent school leader more than they want an IB fanboy or fangirl. They exist. You just have to hit it right. Good luck.

Re: AP vs. IB

Think for a moment about all that was accomplished by students graduating high school in the 1940's - 1960's. Were they all AP or IB students? Far from it. There are many curricula out there and there should remain many curricula out there. What I believe is different today is the quality of our teachers. I say this as someone who had wonderful teachers when I was in high school - a high school that did not offer AP or IB classes and as someone who has worked with wonderful teachers, but far more mediocre ones. I often notice the mediocre ones love the AP and IB; it does a lot of the thinking for them.

Re: Search Fair for 4 Days?

It's sad when having a strong opinion gets one labeled as a drunk poster. Take on my argument, not me.

Re: AP vs. IB

The difference is that I don't love the IB or AP program; I love smart, knowledgeable, and good teachers who get students to learn and think critically. That's pretty rare these days. Just is.

Re: Search Fair for 4 Days?

If you can't afford to go for four days, you should ask yourself if you chose the right career path. If you are that poor and/or poor at planning time off then maybe you should work as a bank teller before those jobs are completely turned over to computers. At least you could rest your brain for a while and make a bit more money. Yet, Search depends on just such people to fill the hotel rooms and ballrooms at their fairs. These are the ones who believe the speech of Don Vito Corleone and his daughter and their assembled band who remind you to "keep an open mind as to where you will end up." After all, $20,000/year in Casablanca can't be that bad. You will have an enriching experience, if not a financially enriching one. Ha! My offers never came at fairs, they came in the days right after only after I plugged away all four fair days networking and networking and networking some more. I always left pissed that I had no job but pleased that I wasn't leaving after taking one face to face made by a philanderer looking for a dupe to sign right away in Dubai, Kuwait, China, or the Caribbean or else lose all chances until next recruiting season. Don't put up with that BS!

Re: Bachelor and teacher cert versus Bachelor in Education ?

If all a teacher has is an undergrad degree in Education, I would laugh as I read the application and then throw it away. Get a certificate after studying a subject. If all you studied in university was what today's "intellectuals" consider educational best practices, you literally left university dumber than when you came in. Study something real like History, Math, Biology, etc. Don't waste three or four years studying mush. I have witnessed principals who were educated at Ivies who only studied mush who just flamed out after a few months in charge because they can't deal with reality.

Re: AP vs. IB

If anyone wants to better understand why university campuses are filled with so many drones and uppity self-satisfied know-it-alls, you can look no further than the AP and IB curricula. Both are scams that produce students who think they are God's gift to humanity while having no self awareness. I always find it amazing that so many teachers just blindly teach these curricula without asking the hard questions regarding what the students who complete these programs/courses will look and act like and how will they add or subtract from our society.

While IB may be slightly more geared towards critical thinking and AP slightly more geared towards memorization, both, at their foundations, take a very globalist world-view that whether you agree with it or not, is a novel way to teach that has only been tried at this scale in the last twenty years. I find it to be an experiment worth cutting short, but because the quality of teachers is so remarkably low these days most teachers wouldn't know how to craft their own curriculum if locked in a padded cell with a book in their content area for a week! Many teachers have bought into working in a school that is program centered and not relationship centered because a relationship with most of these teachers would be pretty tough to develop since so many are quite vapid and most of the teachers have no interest in developing relationships with students as much as reading from the script. One day I hope the pendulum swings in the other direction.

Re: International Schools Paying $100,000+

@marina

I feel like you are a child leaving home, leaving international education, but at least you are a child who is graduating on to bigger and better things as opposed to those who fail out and move in with their parents until they are 40+ (which could certainly describe the disposition of many an international teacher)! Great job and congratulations! If they ever reactivate PMs, please PM me the school you are going to join so I can join you there in financial paradise. Please keep contributing your international insights and don't just disappear into the ether.
