Re: Seeking preliminary info about International Teaching

Jamike,

Your background does make you marketable particularly the economics especially if you have taught IB. I have taught in Africa, Asia, and Middle East. We loved every school and enjoyed each country. Your best bet for having money to travel and savings would be Asia, Middle East or Eastern Europe. You can certainly make do in Western Europe, but you will have limited money to travel and it will be hard to save.

I would advise you to go into the process with an open mind. Focus more on the school and country rather than a set region. There are great places all around the world.

Re: Joining ISS

Alexandru,

If you have the financial means, I would advise registering with both ISS and Search. If you can only afford one, I would go with Search as they are used by more schools. You can also post your resume on TIE for low cost.

Many schools use the database to search for candidates, which will increase your exposure. Also, Search or ISS have confidential recommendations. Many schools prefer to use ISS and Search for this purpose, particularly if they get many applicants. It is easier to do a quick scan of your references on Search or ISS to decide if they want to interview you rather than trying to track down your references. Open letters of reference you may have are pretty much useless from a recruiter's standpoint.

Re: Stats, Pros & Cons (Oh My!)

Newsadvisor,

Go for it. There will be some schools who will shy aways due to age restrictions, but there are many that don't start until 65 or later. You years of experience will serve you well.

The question some will ask is how happy will your husband be if he cannot find work. In many countries, he would be prevented for working due to visa issues or because the host country carpenters would be charging far less for the same job.

As a recruiter that would be my main question, as spouses who are unhappy will significantly limit how long a teacher stays in country.

Re: Bangkok Questions

Rudyard,

I would be careful about counting your coaching as teaching experience. If you put down 7 years, then in it comes out in the interview or reference check that the years coaching was not full-time teaching experience, most schools will stop the process because you gave them false or misleading information.

Honestly present yourself. I taught for this many years and coached at a high level in these sports for this many years. Depending upon the sport, this may be very attractive to a school. I once knew a MS PE teacher who got a position with a wife who was not going to teach and two kids in a top tier school because he was an outstanding basketball coach and the admin wanted to win the regional tournament.

Re: Is this a red flag to recruiters?

coughingfurballs,

First of all, ignore resigio. Must be a bitter person who clearly did not read your email.

As a recruiter, I do not see any red flags. You path is pretty typical. Short stays in the beginning but longer ones moving forward. Three and four years stints are fine. If you are asked about the one year in the ME, simply say it was not a good fit. The veteran administrators will recognise the name of the shoddy school and understand.

Good luck with your search!

Re: 2017-2018 Recruiting

For teachers, the openings will really start in October with the vast majority being posted in December. Having said that, some schools have already posted some.

The contract renewals dates are getting earlier and earlier, with many schools now offering bonuses to teachers who let the school know early that they will be resigning.

Thames advice is good. Write a short customised letter of interest and send it directly to the school to apply. In the letter, let them know you have a file with Search.

You should do well, SPED teachers are always in demand.

Re: Interviewing the Interviewers

Hitesteacher,

As a recruiter, I would not complete your form before we interview simply due to time constraints at a fair. After the interview, if I thought there might be a fit, I would make sure we had time to go through all of your questions in person. If I offered you a contract, I would be happy to put it in writing if you felt it was necessary. While not as formal as you detailed, I have had a number of candidates request similar information, which I am happy to share. My resume is on Linked in and I give them the names of other admin or teachers at the fair who know me. Teachers need to feel comfortable where they are going.

For administrators, the goal is to hire and retain high quality teachers. If I am not honest or forthcoming with you during the recruiting process, then you will leave after two years, which is not good for the school.

I would encourage teachers to develop a list of questions to ask the recruiters as well as others in the organization.

Re: ISS or Search

lemon lily,

If the money is not too much, I would encourage you to sign up with both. While many schools use both, there are a good number that only use one or the other. Signing up with both would increase your exposure.

It is a bit of pain for your references to do two forms, but they only take a few minutes to complete.

If you only went with one, I would go with Search, they have more schools.

Re: Choosing the right fair..

Helloiswell,

If you can only go to one, go to Search in Cambridge. There will be over 100 schools there many from Asia but also others around the world. Like the previous posts, I would advise you to move fast to get your file activated and a confirmation for the Search fair. Frequently the fair will fill up with candidates by October or November.

ISS Atlanta is a small fair and given the December timing, schools will be looking at IB teachers or couples. It would rare that you would get an offer a school with only two years experience so early in the fair. I also doubt there will be many schools from Asia in attendance. It is generally South American schools.

Re: Search Fair for 4 Days?

Wilcoman,

For candidates, it is generally a two and half day event. It is good if you can be there on the Thursday for early interviews, but not absolutely necessary. Most candidates, who do not live locally, travel on Thursday and get to the hotel by mid to late afternoon on Thursday. If you live close enough, you can catch a late flight after work on Thursday.

The key days are Friday and Saturday. You definitely want to the be there for the sign-ups on Friday morning. Interviews will take place Friday afternoon and Saturday. You can leave on Sunday early afternoon or even morning if needed to get back home for work on Monday.

Re: Part time positions

I do not know of a school that has hired a part-time teacher with full overseas-hire benefits. I have seen these positions filled as part of a teaching couple with the partner taking a full-time position.

Re: Abu Dhabi

Lpbuckley,

I spent seven years in the ME and enjoyed most of my time there. I was in a country more conservative than the UAE. Most of our entertainment came from the school and expat community, so your experience will partly depend upon the school where you are working. If it is ACS, then you will have a good sized community with which to connect. If you are going to one of the government funded schools, then you will be more on your own. I know a number of people who have enjoyed living in the UAE and teaching at ACS.

I would advise you to ask the recruiters for the names and email address of some of the current staff at the school who are roughly the same age and stage of life (single, married, kids, etc.) and ask them how they like live in Abu Dhabi, what people do on the week-end and the like.

Tell us more about your experience teaching. Has it been in a k-12 school setting or a tutoring center?

Re: Acceptance of Teacher Ready/Teach Now certification?

TD,

Make sure the certification they are offering to help you with is a state certification, one that would allow you to teach in a particular state, not a "Teach Away" certification. If it is, you would then list you are certified in xyz state, which would at least satisfy the requirement most international schools have that applicants have certification.
