Re: How Competitive is my CV? Looking for feedback!

The definition of 'elite' only applies to a handful of top-tier schools in East and South-East Asia (Bangkok, KL, Taipei, and a couple of them in Tokyo) where you'll earn every single penny, but can live like a true expat, especially if you're a teaching couple. No other region offers savings like schools in these cities, but if you're not the hard working type, you'll leave sooner than planned.

Re: I need to retrain in order to survive this pandemic.

How about finding a job at a lower tier international school, get paid, and study part-time? There is always a school that fits your CV. You can even request some PD funds towards your teaching courses. BTW, where do you wanna teach?

Re: Coup in Myanmar

According to an admin friend, things haven't changed much for schools overnight. There is police presence on the streets and due to prevailing uncertainty, there is some rush at the grocery shops and supermarkets. It's a wait and watch game for the next 12 months. If sanctions are imposed and you're relocating, you should be asking more questions about making wire transfers abroad.

Re: A question for those with kiddos...

Not all public school systems are good and not all of them offer an education in English. You need to research on the quality of the curriculum, behavioural issues, ministry of education rules etc. However, you can't go wrong if you can make it to Singapore whether it's a public school or a tier 2/3 international school. Some private bilingual schools in Thailand also offer an okay international program and are relatively inexpensive and you'd have a good shot at getting a job. Why not try your chances at international schools in Kenya or Namibia?

Finding a full-time job at top-tier schools in any subject (particularly in SE Asia) expects you to be at the top of the game, which means knowing your content like the back of your hand and you can handle teaching and advising large cohorts of HS students with ease. You might also be asked to teach a second and rarely, third subject at short notice.

Re: Cover letter length

Agree with sid. Two-page CV and one-page cover letter are typical. The strength of a cover letter lies in candidates' willingness to work within the limitations of a system and accomplishing without much whining and complaining. I'd also highlight wider contributions to the school community and evidence of a growth mindset and commitment to lifelong learning. Schools on Schrole have some interesting recruitment questions that can help you write a robust cover letter. Alternatively, read schools' mission statements before typing one.

The top tier British school in Bangkok used to pay 50% of the monthly salary in pounds. Not sure if that is still the case.

Re: Do I have a chance?

The older UK schools in Asia are pretty conservative in their hiring practices and they prefer someone with experience in their national curriculum. Having said that, there are also schools that offer a mix of Canadian, (I)GCSE and IB. China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, and Vietnam are your best bets. Take a look at these pages.

Alternatively, find a lower rung school in East Asia that is willing to train you in the IB approaches to teaching and learning, get the experience, and then, move to a better paying school.

Re: Do I have a chance?

@Forteach
IB experience could be a deal breaker, but established and not-for-profit schools, who are often backed by the local U.S. embassy pay well and treat you like a professional. Some of these schools also offer AP curriculum. You could market yourself as a twin-subject teacher on your CV, say math-physics, to gain that extra advantage. Computer science and robotics are two other areas where there is significant demand. If you could convince a school about your versatility in teaching as well as coaching multiple subjects and activities, who knows, there might be a job for you. Since the coming school year is seeing increased competition due to laid off teachers and people wanting to move to specific countries due to poor public health management in their current locations, 2022-23 school year should be more manageable from a recruitment perspective. I'd work on writing a robust cover letter highlighting not just areas of expertise, but professional accomplishments relating to exam results, active membership of the community and voluntary spirit.

Re: Do I have a chance?

With a CV like that, you don't need to seek advice here. I'd go ahead and apply to all tier 1 schools in Asia. There is only one decent school on the island. Many international schools are over-rated, not really on par with private schools in the U.S. or U.K.

Re: when they say they will consider you for future posts, will they?

Recruiting has evolved for the worse and is more of a business transaction these days. Of course, there are a very few exceptions, but the excess supply of teachers where an increasing number of them are enrolling in EdD/PhD programs to look competitive. Not sure how many of them actually take these degrees to completion. The visa and work permit regulations have also become stringent, thanks to a few bad apples. How do you remember one teacher from the past when you get 80-100 applications for each vacancy in the following year?

Re: when they say they will consider you for future posts, will they?

That's like the lottery company saying, 'We are cheering for you to win big bucks next time." International schools are commercial enterprises, even the not-for-profit ones and everyone is dispensable. The sooner you realise, the better.

There are heads of schools who graduated from tier 3 schools in the US. It's your a nalytical skills, experience, creativity, and time-tested wisdom that will propel you forward, not your GPA.

Re: How much harder is it to get hired in Western Europe?

If you are at a top notch school in Asia, moving back to Europe isn't much of a problem at all. SE Asia is more cut-throat (Bangkok, Singapore, KL etc.). You can find lower tier teachers in Asia moving to tier 1 in Europe.

Re: Singapore Cost of Living and Salaries

The top tier schools do offer international insurance excluding elective and planned treatments in the U.S. Aetna and AXA are the two major expat healthcare providers, and the former provides a far better service. Foreigners aren't eligible for the local subsidised 'Medisave' plan unless you gain permanent residency. At some schools, dental and orthodontic treatments are part of the plan, whereas in others they aren't. You could also email Pacific Prime, who act as brokers to international schools. https://www.pacificprime.sg
They are pretty efficient. I don't know much about the lower tier schools. There are some serious travel restrictions on foreign medical tourists entering Malaysia and I think they are dealing with cases on an individual basis.
