Re: School is changing our contracts in the spring

What's being grandfathered in?

Do you have an option to sign the new contract or not? If you refuse, what happens?

If you choose not to sign can you walk away claiming, rightly, that the school has moved the goalposts? (Also, do you trust them to let you walk away with no downside?)

Is there any recourse to/through local law?

How significant are the changes? Not that this matters morally, but it does matter materially. Essentially, how much are you prepared to, and can you, swallow?

Re: British Columbia Criminal Record Check

I think it's always essential to get a police check from a country that you leave.

Schools should be requiring these anyway, but always get one as you leave.

Re: Avoid Swiss boarding schools

It's the rule of 3:

- savings
- lifestyle
- travel

choose two of the above.

Although of course international travel is moot at the moment.

I know.

But I just thought it wouldn't hurt to set the record straight for anyone who might chance across the conversation.

You might earn six figures, but when chicken costs 71% more than the UK, then it doesn't really add up...

Re: How long is your commute?

33 minutes by trams - very reliable trams (3 times a week)
33-36 minute run (twice a week)
20 minute cycle (rarely/never)

I enjoy the commute on the trams as I can listen to podcasts.

Re: PE Teachers and schools that only locally hire

I have also heard rumours of some schools in Switzerland following this pathway too.

Would make very little difference in Switzerland as salaries would be the same and there is no package to speak of.

In fact, local teachers in government schools often get paid more than teachers in international schools.

Re: Should we pull out of China move?

Why won't the move happen?

Have the school been in touch with you about how the process will work?

Have you been in contact with them?

Re: 32K - Average Salary for International Teachers?

Salary - cost of living = savings.

Some places with a low cost of living will still pay a high salary because of location. Some won't. Some places with a high cost of living will pay a salary that doesn't allow for high savings. Some won't.

I'm off to measure pieces of string....

Topic: Physics or Middle School Science? Ranking?

Re: Physics or Middle School Science? Ranking?

I'll bite on these two:

Counselor - *** I put these so low because they really belong on the Junior Leadership scale. ISs dont really need counselors its just another student management position to inflate the leadership hierarchy. Its for when the AP/VP/DP doesnt want to do the PTA or parents coffee mixer, and senior leadership wants a buffer between them and the faculty and everyone else.

Just wrong. The students in international schools are very much in need of someone in the counselor position. What this has to do with PTA or coffee mixers is a mystery to me. One of is confused as to what Counselors actually do.

Early childhood - **** Anyone can do this who is an adult, provided the job is nothing more than babysitting and child care.

Wrong and insulting. Early childhood, done properly, is so much more than this. This is offensive.

We've had confirmed cases in some students and families as well - half a dozen students, and a similar number of parents.

2 in my own quite small school.

And surprisingly none among my wider network of former colleagues.

I agree with Sid - check the figures on Numbeo so you can work out what the savings potential is.
